ELIZA EGGLETON nee MIDDLETON by Val Wilkinson

Eliza Middleton was born at Appin on 30 May 1826, to Caroline Middleton daughter of William Middleton and his wife Sarah nee Gunn. Caroline was only 16 years old at the time. The little girl, Eliza, was baptised, not quite three weeks later, on Sunday 18 June at St. Peters Church of England, Campbelltown, Michael Brennan being named as the father.

In 1828, when Eliza was two years old, her mother, Caroline Middleton, married Thomas McAlister. Sometime in 1829 or 1830, the family made the arduous journey from Appin to Darbalara Station, a squatting run on the junction of the Murrumbidgee and Tumut Rivers. This run was held by Eliza's uncle, William Warby, who was married to Caroline's sister, Jemima Middleton.

Over the coming years, Eliza's half-brothers and half-sisters were born to the family at Darbalara where Thomas McAlister was employed. After the McAlisters left Darbalara, they moved closer to the infant village of Tumut where Eliza would have met William Eggleton, the 26 year-old son of William and Susannah Eggleton.

On 20 July 1841, when just fifteen years old, Eliza married William Eggleton at the temporary church in Tumut according to the rites of the Church of England. Rev. Charles Brigstoke of Yass performed the ceremony on one of his tours of duty to the outlying regions of his parish. Eliza's step-father, Thomas McAlister, was a witness to the marriage.

At the time of their marriage, the village of Tumut was situated at Mill Angle, near the Tumut River crossing below the present day race-course. William Eggleton was a blacksmith by trade, his shop being in the village and it was to here that Eliza came on her marriage. According to one report, their residence had been close to the site of the "mile post" on the race track in later years. After the village was inundated a number of times by the flooding waters of the Tumut River, a new site away from the
river was planned by Surveyor Townsend. Eliza and William Eggleton eventually moved their residence and business to the new site and set up their blacksmith's shop in Wynyard Street.

Eliza and William were blessed with four sons, Thomas, William jnr, John and Robert. In February 1858 Eliza endured the tragedy of losing John at the age of 11 years after he had suffered for two days from "cramps in the stomach".

However, Eliza had the great pleasure of seeing her two sons, Thomas and William, marry two sisters, Annie and Isabella Percival, themselves daughters of very early Tumut residents. It seems Robert moved away from the district and his whereabouts have not yet been traced.

Following the marriage of her sons, grandchildren arrived, and Eliza was able to cherish the births of four of William's children - Phoebe, Thomas, Selina and Mary; and the two eldest of Thomas' family - William and Robert.

Whilst still in her middle forties, Eliza's health began to fail. She suffered for several years before she died at the age of 49 of blood problems, exhaustion and general decay of the system on 26 December 1873, having grasped at life for one last Christmas with the family. Eliza Eggleton was buried in the Protestant Burial Ground at Tumut, but sadly no memorial now marks the place. Just two and a half years later, William died in April 1876 and presumably lies beside his wife.

Eliza's life was similar to that of many women of her era - marrying young and earing children. However, Eliza was fortunate in having her mother close at hand or help, advice and re-assurance. Her siblings and their families were settled in the district, providing a support structure in times of need, and no doubt she provided support for them in turn. Whilst not living into the twentieth century, her two married sons had large families, so Eliza's legacy is her numerous Eggleton descendants with many still living in and around Tumut.
