| Personal Notes: |
|
Robert Cooke was born in Tipperary, Ireland in 1809. His father had fought under Wellington in the Battle of Waterloo. Robert landed in Australia in 1836 and after two years (in 1838) came to Tumut.
At first Robert Cooke selected land on the Gilmore Creek, then known as The Pound Station and later occupied by the McGillivray family. He then went to the Upper Murray and in 1850 returned to Tumut and purchased at public auction a considerable number of rich river flat blocks in the vicinity of Shelley's Bridge on the west side of the river. The property later became known as "Petfield". For many years he leased much of the land to tenant farmers. Some of those farmers remained tenants for over 50 years. He had freehold land along the river flats comprising 709 acres, purchased at the time for £l per acre. Robert Cooke died on 29 May 1892 aged 83 years. His wife Marianne Cooke, who was born at Tyrone, Ireland on 21 October 1821, died at Tumut on 27 August 1907 aged 86 years. Mrs. Cooke's mother, Mrs. Jane Robinson, who also was born at Tyrone, Ireland on 3 April 1794, and who had lived for years with the Cookes at "Petfield" died on 10 August 1881, aged 87 years. Descendants of Robert Cooke have occupied a portion of the original estate until at least 1967. |
