DEATH OF Mrs. COOKE. We sadly regret to record the Mrs. Cooke, widow of the late Mr. Robert Cooke, and one of our oldest and most respected residents, died at the comfortable old home at Petfield that has been occupied by her ever since she came to the district 52 years ago. She was a sister of Mr. Jas, Robinson of Kimo, and of Mrs. Vyner, now residing in Sydney. The surviving members of her family, Mrs Stevens, Messrs. James and John Cooke, were present when their affectionate mother breathed her last; but a regrettable circumstance was that Mrs. Stevens was suffering from a severe attack of illness at the time, she having been considerably worried by the death of her brother in Gundagai, the week previous to her mother's demise, and the serious illness of the latter portending the approaching end, and which no doubt was accelerated by the sad calamity occasioned by the death of her youngest son (Mr. E. G. Cooke). We have been unable to glean all particulars required pertaining to the obituary notice of such an old and esteemed resident, therefore we have to hold same over for next issue. The funeral, which was largely attended (many people having journeyeed up from Gundagai to be present at it), took place on Wednesday afternoon last, Rev. W D Kennedy performong the obsequies at the grave, and after the Anglican service had been read the Capaain of the Salvation Army, of which the late Mrs. Cooke had been a most consistent supporter for years past, expressed sentiments bearing on the good qualities of the deceased, who, he said, truly loved God, and was prepared to meet her death, as she was so find of talking of spiritual matters, and led a life in accordance with the teachings of the Saviour. A more Christianlike woman he (the speaker) had never met. Mr. Jas. Elphick had all the arrangements connected with the undertaker's duties in perfect order, the coffin being of polished cedar witli silver mountings, and it was completely hidden from view in the hearse by a large number of beautiful wreaths placed upon it as a last mark of respect entertained towards the deceased by a very large circle of sincere friends. Those who sent wreaths (and many of them were made up by leading city nurseries) were— Mr. and Mrs Emanuel, Mary and Van (cousins of Mrs. Stephens, and daughters of Mr. Vernon, Govt. Architect, of Sydney). Mrs Stephens and Mr Jas. Cooke, Mr. J. Robinson, Mrs. Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. O'Dea, Miss Minnie Bartholomew, Mr. and Mrs. W. Robinson, grandchildren of deceased, Maud, John and Jack (members of Mr. W. Robinson's family), Mr. and Mrs. W. L. King (Young), Mr. and Mrs. H. L. Harris, William, Fred, Kitty, Con and Glover (of Mrs. Steven's family) Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Fraser, Mr. and Mrs. John Cooke, Mr. J. R. Love of Messrs. Love & Co., (Rose Bay), and Mrs. Brown ('''The Cottage"), and Nurse Saunders. The pall-bearers were Messrs. J. Weeden, H. L. Harris, M. S. Downing, C. J. Fraser, Thos. O'Hare and Wallace Love (cousin to members of deceased's family; and Mr. A. Broughton carried the wreaths from the hearse to the grave. Deceased's remains were interred between those of her late husband and Mrs. Jane Robinson (a sister) in the old cemetery. Her age was 85 years, and the ages of those buried on either side of her, at times of death, were, the husband 83 years, and the sister 87, years, the former having died in 1892, and the latter in 1881. |
