- Notes: Daniel Lane Herlihy was born at the Nine Mile on the Kiandra Gold Diggings in 1874. Throughout his life he maintained a keen interest in mining, particularly gold mining. In 1875 Daniel Lane Herlihy's parents moved to Michelago, then securing a large propefiy at Argalong. It was there that Dan Herlihy established himself as a man of the land.

In 1890 he was in partnership in a butchering business at Argalong with a man named Lynch. In 1902 when his father died he commenced dealing in cattle and sheep.

In 1902 he purchased 6,000 sheep and 1,000 cattle in the Southern portion of NSW and Victoria. These stock did well in the improved pastures at Argalong. Dan Herlihy was one of the first men in the district to use superphosphates for pasture improvement.

He was a Councillor in the flrst Tumut Shire Council, then called Yarrangobilly Shire, later Gadara Shire, and now Tumut Shire. (It retained the name of Gadara Shire until amalgamated with the Tumut Municipality.)

He was a Shire Councillor continuously for twenty- one years and five times President. A noted orator and debater, he was unrelenting in his endeavours to have decent roads constructed to open up the timber reserves and the potential fruit growing and grazing areas in the Micalong and Brindabella districts.

In 1903 Daniel Lane Herlihy married Emily, a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. James Crowe, pioneers since 1830 at Gobarralong. Their children were;

> Frances Herlihy (Rev. Sister Mary Maur of Melbourne),
> Angela Herlihy (maried E.A. Young);

> Margaret Herlihy (who died in infancy).

Dan Herlihy and his wife were a lovable couple, charitable and friendly to all. He died on 27 May 1964 and his wife died in 1956.
