The Tumut and Adelong Times 5 Mar 1946
OBITUARY MR. DAVID PATTON The late Mr. David Patton, whose death was reported in our last issue, was born at Gocup and was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Patton of Midway. He was educated at the old Gocup School and when his education was finished he was then employed by the late Mr. Spencer Groves, who was at that time the proprietor of the "Tumut Times and Adelong Argus". He did not take too kindly to office work and after a year or two terminated his employ in the printing trade and later was engaged by the district surveyor. He worked in the survey camps in the Tumut, Adelong, Gundagai and Wagga districts for a period of five years. Striking out on his own account, he selected land on the Goobragandra River and followed sheep and cattle raising for the greater part of his life. In 1892 he married Miss Hannah Auckland, second eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Auckland of Goobragandra, and to the union were born five children. In 1931 the late Mr. Patton left the Tumut district and purchased a property at Mount Druitt, leaving his son Harry in charge of his Goobragandra property. For a number of years he paid periodical visits to his old home until failing health prevented him coming (to use his own words) to "the place he loved best". He passed away at Mount Druitt on the 25th of February. 1946, aged 81 years, the cause of death being senile decay. The remains were interred in the R.G portion of St. Mary's Cemetery, the Rev. Fr. Riley officiating at the graveside. The casket was strewn with wreaths. The funeral arrangements were carried out by J. C. Price & Son. Those left to mourn his loss are his wife, sons Norman (Mount Druitt), Harry and William (Goobragandra), daughters Lily (Mrs. E. Ratliff, Glen Innes) and Daisy (Mrs. A. J. Jerbin, Jerilderie) ; brothers Tom Patton (Lacmalac), James Patton (Tumut) ; sister Lizzie (Mrs. H .Gribb, Midway). One sister, Lucy, predeceased him in infancy. There are also five grandchildren. The late Mr. Patton was a member of the Hibernian Lodge. He was very popular throughout the Tumut district during his residence in these parts and many old friends mourn his passing. Among the floral tributes were those from the following:—J. Patton and family; wife and family; Mr. and Mrs. A. Irvin, Bemboka; Mr. and Mrs. C S Mitchell, Bemboka; Poppy and Don; Mr. and Mrs. McCready; Mrs. McFarlane and family; Daisy, Joe and Sybil; Mrs. Turner, Bernie and family; Mr. and Mrs. A. Moorhead; C. of E. Guild; Raffell and family. |
