Daughter of Kieran and Elizabeth M Married Thomas in 1864 at Tumut with 5 children born of this union. The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950) Tue 4 Mar 1930 MRS MARY ANN PATTON The late Mrs. Mary Ann Patton, who died on Monday, 24th inst., from senile decay, was born in the Yass district in the year 1843, being the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Keeran Claffey. When she was about seven years old her parents removed to Nangus, near Gundagai, and she was living at Nangus, with her parents, when Gundagai was washed away and many lives lost in the memorable flood of 1852. Her parents later on removed to Lacmalac and settled on the land fronting the Goobragandra River, which now forms part of the estate, recently purchased by Mr. J. Kell from Mr. W. Long. It was while her parents resided at Lacmalac that her mother died, leaving a family of three sons and four daughters and her father. Being the eldest daughter, she then had to take the big responsibility of rearing the younger members of the family, keeping house for her father until she married Mr. Thos Patton of Tumut Plains, then, together with her husband, made her home at Gocup, taking with her the youngest member of the family (Ellen), who she cared for until the girl was grown up. Mrs Patton left Gocup in 1875, with her husband (who took up land at Midway, the property now owned by her son James) and resided there continually for over 50 years. She was a smart, active woman in her early life, clever with the needle, making all the garments worn by her growing family by hand (before the sewing machine came along), and when she wanted groceries she mounted her hack in the old side saddle style and rode to Tumut or Adelong for her supply. She was one of the only two remaining pioneers of Gocup and Midway, the surviving one being Mr. James McEvoy, of bridgebuilding fame, who now resides in Capper Street, Tumut. About 8 years ago her sight began to fail, which deprived her of her usual out-door exercise, and from then on her active life began to fade away. About 10 months ago she was brought from her home to Tumut and resided with Mrs J. McNamara until her demise. She leaves, to mourn the loss of an affectionate mother, three sons (David, Goobragandra; Thos. Henry, Lacmalac; James, Midway), and one daughter (Mrs H. Cribb, of Midway). She also leaves three sisters (Mrs. Buckley, Goobragandra ; Mrs Thompson, Newcastle; and Mrs. Merryfull, Adelong). Her husband predeceased her 31 years ago, also did one daughter, Lucy, and three brothers and one sister. The funeral took place on Wednesday, 26th inst, being very largely attended, and the remains were interred in the Catholic portion of the old cemetery beside those of her late husband. The pall-bearers were Messrs David, Thomas Henry and James Patton (sons), and Leslie, Jack and Wallie (grandson). Rev.Fr. Osmund officiated at the graveside, and Mr. H. W. Baker was the funeral director. |
