Personal Notes:
Elizabeth Harriet Elworthy, the eldest daughter of George and Emma, was born on 04 Nov 1835 and baptised on the 26th at St Petrock, the parish in which the Bowchers lived.
Elizabeth accompanied her sister Eliza and cousins Sarah and Asenath on the 'Mooltan', disembarking at Geelong but from that time onward, I could find no trace whatsoever of her in any records. Family legend says she died on 23 Sep 1855, giving birth to an illegitimate child.
On a photograph of the headstone of a family grave (Plots 2940 and 2941) at the old Devonshire Street cemetery the name of Elizabeth Harriet shows plainly - yet there is no record of her death in the Registrar-General's Office!
Admittedly the headstone does declare "In Memory of the Beloved Children of George & Emma Elworthy", so either she died somewhere as yet undiscovered or else she was dead in her father's eyes.

1841 with Thomas and Eliza Toby, wine and spirit retailers, New Bridge Street, St. Edmund, Exeter. 1851 living at home. Never married. Emigrated to Australia with sister Eliza and cousins Sarah and Asenath on the ship Mooltan.

I cannot find a death record for Elizabeth Harriet Elworthy. The only record of a death in 1855 with dad George and mum Emma is Eliza Smith (909/1856). Maybe she married. There is one possible marriage. Elizabeth H Willing married John Smith in 1855. Willing & Smith.

Sydney Morning Herald 17 Sep 1855 "FUNERAL.—The Friends of Mr. DONALDSON are respectfully requested to attend the funeral of his late departed Wife, Elizabeth, on TUESDAY MORNING, at 9 o'clock. The procession will move from the residence of her father (Mr. Elworthy, tailor, Pitt-street), at the above hour precisely.— CHAS. KINSELA, undertaker, Goulburn-street."

- Notes: To back up what I found regarding the funeral for Elizabeth, I received the following details from an enquiry I put out on a message board yesterday. It does show that Elizabeth was buried on 23rd Sept 1855 but the SMH funeral notices confirm that her funeral was 18th Sept (a Tuesday) and, seeing that there had also been a previous notice in the SMH on the 17th, I’d say she died about 16th Sept (a Sunday)…..exactly one week before the date recorded here – the 23rd Sept (a Sunday).

I wonder if the burial record was not competed straight away and when it was, the correct day was noted but a week out?

Anyway, the information I’ve been sent, and which may well add a few more thin gs to your records, confirms that Elizabeth, George, Charles Henry and Alice Mary were all buried in the old Sydney burial grounds. They were then exhumed (request was Elizabeth’s cousin Asneath Elworthy Roberts) and re-interred in the Roberts grave at Waverley Cemetery.

Wonder if Elizabeth died at her wedding.???
she was only 20yrs.
Strange that there isn't a marriage or death cert.
Be worth seeing if there was an inquest, as the dates are a little different Hope this may help, Lynne
