She had a mental collapse after the birth of her last child and did not accompany her family to Australia in 1853. She was burried in the graveyard of St Thomas' Church, Exeter (England), next to her father.
Her death certificate has her dying at 1 Albert Terrace, St Thomas. Death notified by Elizabeth Toby of that address. A letter has her as Lady Emma Boucher connected to the Earl of Bath. | - Notes: Because it was recorded in a large family Bible brought to Australia, we have an
actual birth date for Emma Bowcher, one of the progenitors of most who will be reading this book. Presumably the Bowchers had moved house about the time of John's business problems and Emma was the first of the children born in St Petrock. She arrived on 18 Aug 1810 and was baptised in the parish church on the 30th. Emma married 20-year-old GEORGE ELWORTHY on 08 Sep 1833 at East Stonehouse and died in Exeter on 08 Jul 1854, less than a year after her husband and eight children went to the other side of the world. | - Notes: So far I haven't been able to determine what caused the 'long illnesses' that
afflicted this family. Sarah Bowcher died at 22, Charles at 18, Mary died of consumption and their father John also had a prolonged illness. Family legend says Emma had a nervous breakdown after the birth of her last child. The death notice I found says she died of a paralytic stroke! She could easily have had a prior stroke which may have prevented her starting a new life 'down under' in Australia. The conditions on board ship and the time taken to travel half way across the world with George and children in 1853 would have been almost impossible for an invalid. Emma was said to have been buried in the churchyard of St Thomas alongside her father who predeceased her by 26 years. I have a rather soft spot for Emma and wanted to see her grave - but a check with Exeter City Council revealed no record of this double burial. However, many written records have not survived but as it is the parish where John Bowcher Second's four eldest children were born and where he lived throughout his first marriage, it sounds quite credible. |
