Gundagai Time and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee Advertiser 18 Apr 1899
Unique Record of Domestic Troubles. The misfortunes of the family of Mr. Jas. Kiss, of South Gundagai. are beyond anticipation. After a great trial of sickness in the home, two deaths have occurred in the family within the short space of five days. On Sunday last a 14-year-old son dropped dead from heart disease, whilst Miss Millie Kiss aged 17, after an illness extending over six weeks, died at her father's home at 10.30 p.m. on Friday last from typhoid fever. The case of Miss Kiss was considered hopeless from the first. She was ill for two weeks before medical aid was called in, and when Dr. Crooks first saw the patient he found her temperature as high as 103. From that there was little hope, the temperature going to 105.6, the lowest reading at any time being 103. The patient lingered on in a delirious condition and probably her death was hastened by the knowledge of the death of her brother. This makes the third death of typhoid fever to occur in this house in recent years, so probably a pest core exists somewhere in the locality. The funeral of Miss Kiss took place on Saturday evening, the remains being interred in North Gundagai cemetery. This is the first death to occur from typhoid fever during the present epidemic. The Kiss family are in extremely dire circumstances, so we hope all who can offer practical sympathy will extend a helping hand. The Kiss Benefit reat sympathy has been aroused for the Kiss family by reason of the series of misfortunes they have lately encountered. Disasters came swift and sudden upon them; with no money and little household comforts to meet a long and trying sickness, the lot was a hard one, and sickness was the forerunner of death. Apart from ordinary disasters, Mr. Kiss lost a son by sudden death only a week ago. We are slow in most matters but sympathy is inherent in our people, and the chord of charity is always responsive to a deserving cause. On Friday night last a meeting of amateurs was held in Walker's hall to devise means to relieve the poverty at present existing in the family. It was decided to hold a monster plain and fancy dress social on Friday night, April 28th, the price of tickets being fixed at 3/-. Mr. Glasby kindly undertook to provide the music free of all charge, Mr. Walker has offered his hall on the same generous terms, and the printers will not be lacking in their portion. Messrs. Hal. Braine and J. P. Kelly are secretaries to the movement. A meeting of ladies to carry out the details of the social will be held at the Literary Institute on Wednesday, at 3 o'clock. We hope this meeting will be well attended, and that the social will be a huge success. |

| - Notes: I am Dorothy's and Edward’s youngest son.
Our surname is Mongan (no ‘H’). Mum died in Pambula Hospital on 1 June 1973. She would have turned 66 on 26 August. Dad was grew up on the family farm in Osborne’s Flat. He was born in 1904. He retired from NSW Police Force in 1964 and we moved to Merimbula. I completed my schooling in Goulburn and took a job in Canberra. Dad moved into aged care in Canberra and died in 1993 shortly after his 89th birthday. My maternal great-grandmother is Elizabeth Boulgaris. Her father Ghikas was transported from Malta for piracy. His name apparently has 30-40 variations. His grave in Nimmitabel has two different versions. |
