Jigger was a convict. He and 6 other Greek sailors were charged and tried for the crime of piracy on the island of Malta in 1827, 3 of the sailors were given life sentences and the other 4 including Jigger were sentenced to 14 years transportation. Jigger was 24 years of age when he arrived at Port Jackson aboard the ship " Norfolk " on the 27th August 1829. The Imperial Government agreed to cover the cost of their passage back to Greece and 5 of them returned to Greece but Jigger and Androni Tu Malonis decided to stay in the colony. On his arrival in the colony, he was assigned to Alexander McLeay who was Scottish and Secretary to Governor Bourke. According to the NSW Government Gazette, dated 21st December 1836, he was granted a Ticket of Leave in 1835, No. 35/844. Jigger, together with the other Greek pirates, was given an Absolute Pardon in 1837. In 1860 he applied for citizenship of Australia and on 13 Mar 1861, he was naturalised. Jigger's death certificate no. 1874/004480. The informant of his death was his wife Mary Ann Bulgaries who notified it on 1 Aug 1874 to S. Robinson at Cooma. The undertaker for his burial was S. Rankin and the witnesses were Wm. Jardine and J. Smith and the priest was Father J. J. Carroll. It is stated on the death certificate that there were 5 sons living, 5 daughters living and 1 daughter deceased. Contributor: Dr. J The Seeker (47214870) • |

| - Notes: I am Dorothy's and Edward’s youngest son.
Our surname is Mongan (no ‘H’). Mum died in Pambula Hospital on 1 June 1973. She would have turned 66 on 26 August. Dad was grew up on the family farm in Osborne’s Flat. He was born in 1904. He retired from NSW Police Force in 1964 and we moved to Merimbula. I completed my schooling in Goulburn and took a job in Canberra. Dad moved into aged care in Canberra and died in 1993 shortly after his 89th birthday. My maternal great-grandmother is Elizabeth Boulgaris. Her father Ghikas was transported from Malta for piracy. His name apparently has 30-40 variations. His grave in Nimmitabel has two different versions. |
