Son of John and Mary Came to the colony with his brother Patrick in 1858 later to be followed by two sisters, the late Mrs Thos. McInerney (mother of Mrs W. McCormick, Mrs W. Claffey, Mrs E. W. O'Sullivan, Mrs John Murray of Gilmore) and the late Mrs Holt (mother of Mr Gabriel Holt, of "Westwood," Tumut, the rest of the family being in W.A. The Catholic Press (Sydney, NSW : 1895 - 1942) Thu 10 Sep 1931 Death of Centenarian. THE LATE ME. JOHN CORRY. Mr. John Corry passed away at his home, the residence of Mr. and Mrs. W. McCormick, Wynyard-street, Tumut, on Friday, August 7, at the age of 101. He was a native of Miltown Malby, County Clare, Ireland. In October, 1858, he arrived in Sydney, went direct to Tumut, and selected land on Bombowlee Creek. He remained there for about four years, then went to Wagra, where his brother Patrick had a farm. During his stay at Wagra, he had several adventures in gold digging. He returned to Tumut 35 years ago, and purchased the land at the foot of Wynyard street. His brother Patrick, and his sisters, Mrs. Thos. Mclnerney and the late Miss. Holt, came to Australia. One sister remained in Ireland, and a brother, Thomas, went to America, all of whom predeceased him. He was unmarried, and is survived by five nieces and five nephews in Australia, and three nieces and three nephews in America, one of the nephews being a priest. The remains were laid to rest in the Catholic portion of the old cemetery, beside his brother and two sisters. Eev. Father J. Sharkey, P.P., officiated at the graveside. — R.I.P. |
