Marriage 21 Feb 1856 Bobundarah Creek near Cooma, New South Wales
GOLDEN WEDDING. MR. AND MRS. JOHN BLYTON. "ROCKLODGE." The golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. John Blyton, of Rock Lodge, was celebrated on the 21st instant by a banquet during the day, and a Social in the evening; and was one of the most enjoyable and successful social gatherings that our correspondent has attended for many years. During the proceedings frequent and sympathetic reference was made to the sad and sudden event which prevented the attendance of Mr. J. H. Alcock who was secretary and chief organiser in the celebrations. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Alcock were absent for the same reason. Mr. and Mrs. Blyton have five sons and three daughters, all of whom have married. Mr. George Blyton, Mrs. J. H. Alcock and Mrs. Poole were absent, but the rest of the family were present, at well as most of the 40 grand-children. Among the 250 guests were two of Mr. Blyton's brothers, and sister-in-law, and one of Mrs. Blyton's brothers. Apologies for non-attendance were received from Members of Parliament, from the Rev. Father Norris, and all the protestant clergymen of Cooma, and over 20 other residents of Sydney, Cooma, Nimitybelle, Bega, Dalgety and other places. Mr. John Crisp J.P. presided at the banquet, and by his genial manner, and resourcefulness considerably varied the programme, put vitality into the proceedings, and contributed in no small degree to make the banquet the success it undoubtedly was. He was materially assisted by Mrs. David Williams, Mr. T. Stummer of Cooma, and others. The vice-chair was occupied by Mr. John Owers, a well-known resident of this locality. The chairman in proposing the heath of Mr. and Mrs. Blyton said he had not only known them for the 37 years they bad been living at Rock Lodge but some years before when they lived on the Snowy River, at the time he was a mere youngster. They had been a most respectable and respected couple much appreciated for their kindness and good nature for over 40 years to his knowledge. After the toast had been drunk enthusiastically with musical honors. Mr. Blyton feelingly responded, and briefly referred to his personal experiences in this district, and expressed his gratitude for the many friendships he had formed and the kindly way he had been treated, particularly in his earlier experiences, and especially by the chairman's parents. The other toasts were, "The Blyton family and relatives," proposed by Mr. Drummond, and responded to by Mr. W. Blyton in his usual eloquent and declamatory style. 'The ladies," proposed by the vice-chairman, and responded to by Messrs Ernest Blyton, Stanley Drummond, and W. Schumack. "The visitors," proposed by Mr. W. Blyton, and very suitably replied to by Messrs John Evans, J.P, Wm. Crisp, and Sumner. 'The chairman" by Mr. Blyton. The programme was varied by songs and recitations, and concluded by singing tbe National Anthem. About 150 attended the Social, and dancing was kept up until daylight, the Messrs Miners supplying the music in a most satisfactory manner. The catering was excellent, and every possible attention was given to the comfort of the guests. Contributor: Dr. J The Seeker (47214870) |
