Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 10 Jul 1914
Obituary When we announced the death, shortly after it occurred, of the well known and popular ancient identity of the district, Mrs. John Richards, we promised to refer in a future issue to some of the past history of the departed friend, and such has only just reached us. With her husband she came to the district in 1858, the latter being engaged with the late Robert Broughton on the Gilmore. Subsequently he followed farming pursuits on Tumut Plains, saving enough to select in 1866 an area of 200 acres which comprised part of the holding now held by his son, Charles, on Windowie Creek. By dint of perseverance and careful husbandry, he was afterwards able to acquire by purchase other holdings, bringing the aggregate area up to 700 acres. Some 12 months ago Mrs. Richards fell into failing health, in fact became so enfeebled that she required constant nursing, which was afforded by her four daughters and her daughter-in-law, who exerted their utmost ability to give her comfort in her ebbing life. She had attained the advanced age of 83½ years when the vital spark left its mundane tenement. There are left to mourn the loss of a life's true helpmate, and a devoted mother, whose main objects here were the welfare of her husband and the care and improvement of the conditions of her children, those who survive her besides her husband viz: Mr. C. Richards (Windowie), Mrs. S. Farthing (North Shore, Sydney), Mrs. T. Warburton (Paddington), Miss Emily (Windowie), Mr. Alfred Richards (Kurrajong Heights), and Mrs. P. Webber (Batlow). Mrs. Ward (Young) and another daughter predeceased her. The funeral took place on June 25, the remains being interred in the C.E. portion of the Tumut Cemetery, Rev. C. E. Burgess officiating at the graveside, and Mr. Jas. Ephick conducting the funeral arrangements.

As soon as they arrived they were hired at the ship by Robert Kennedy Broughton of Gadara. They travelled by train to Campbelltown, the terminus of the line, thence by coach to Gundagai, where they were met by Mr. Broughton.

After working at Gadara for 15 months they were employed by Frederick Wheeler Vyner for a similar period on his propert on the Tumut River about Petfield. They then rented a farm at Tumut Plains and in 1866 acquired from a Mr. Kemp part of the Run No. 14 held under Grazing Licence by Thomas Boyd at Windowie. 8 1/2 miles from Tumut.
