From Find A Grave
The first European settler in the Flaggy Rock area was Edmund Hill, who had left England as a boy in the 1850's, and after spending some time moving around spent a good number of years in the Nebo district before settling on a property in what was later to become known as Upper Flaggy Rock. The year was 1907 and having married years before, the family now comprised of his wife and five children, three boys and two girls. In those days draught horses were very much in demand for farm work and Edmund Hill in time became well known for the high class animals he bred of this type, and possible he bred riding horses as well. Edmund Hill had knowledge of carpentering and built some of the early houses around Flaggy Rock, and not only built hem, but cut and sawed the timber used himself. In 1916, he took up another selection, but this would have been just before the era of canegrowing in the area and he may not have been interested in the venture at the time, as a canegrowing proposition. Later he took on another selection over the Range, and continued breeding horses. In 1939, this original pioneer of Flaggy Rock died, since he came out to Australia as a boy in the 1850's he must have been around ninety years of age, certainly well over eighty. Buried at his property at Flaggy Rock, his grave was marked with white rocks. Over the years, the rocks were moved when cane was planted and the location of the gravesite was subsequently lost. Cause of Death - Myocarditis, Senility |
