HARRY PORTER
When Harry Porter passed
away early this month within
few days of his 85th birthday,
one of the oldest pioneers was
removed from North Queensland.
He was a member of the well
known Porter clan whose blood
is represented in countless families
in the Lower Burdekin district.
Harry Porter was born at
the Don River in the Bowen area
in 1867, but shortly afterwards
the family shifted to Euri Creek
where they continued to reside
tor some years. At 18 years of
age, Harry Porter took a job at
Inkerman Station and held It for
the following 20 years. Then in
partnership with his father he
purchased Broughton Vale, a
cattle property not far from
Inkerman. In 1903 he took up
the family property at Airedale,
Where he resided until his death,
and which is still held by members
of his family. In 1898 he
married Miss Margaret Mackersie.
There are five surviving
children of this marriage - Mesdames
Lennon, Pask, Garoch,
Miss Annie Porter and Mr. George Porter.
His wife predeceased
him In 1943. Harry Porter
was a quiet natured man who
knew only hard work. Born to
a stern bush life he had no edu
cation whatever, and consequently
took no part in public life.
An injury caused by a fall
from a horse early in life caused
Great trouble in his latter years.
He was truly a pioneer, having
in his boyhood and youth
known the Burdekin when it was
little more than a wilderness, he
was one of the ten children to
William and Mary Porter, of
whom only three survive - Mrs
Soper, Mrs Carcary and Mrs Seldon.
One of his earliest recollections
was seeing a younger
brother taken by an alligator at
Euri Creek. He also said that he
Was the first man to drive a herd
of cattle to Alligator Creek meatworks.
