Brisbane Courier (Qld. : 1864 - 1933), Friday 4 April 1902, page 5
Our Bowen correspondent, writing on 31st March, says :-Mr. Peter Gordon, one of the pioneers of the district, who arrived here in 1863 along with Mr. Henning, of Exmoor station, died during the week. Mr. Gordon spent some years as a hotelkeeper at Strathmore and Normanby, but for several years back he has been, engaged dairying on Euri Creek. The deceased was of a most retiring disposition, and was not personally, known to many of the townspeople, but his family, who had settled in town for a number of years, are well known and highly respected, and the funeral was largely attended.

ANOTHER OLD IDENTITY
GONE.
The passing away of Mrs Rachael
Gordon, relict of the late Peter
Gordon, at her residence at 2.20
a.m. on 6th March, at the age of
80 years and 2 months, removes
another very old and respected
identity from our midst, one of
that hardy band of pioneers that
came of the good old stock, and
went out into the wild bush and
battled against fearful odds for
oftentimes not more than a living
and did so much for the civilisation
that followed. Born In County
Armagh, Ireland, the late Mrs
Gordon arrived in on the
last day of 1863, in the sailing ship
Wansfel, landing at the Pilot Stat-
ion. She was the youngest girl on.
the ship, being only 19 years of
age on Jauuary 7, 1864. Mr and
Mrs Gordon purchased the Strath-
more Hotel, situated near the Son-
oma turnoff on the Bowen Downs
Road, a few miles on the Bowen
side of Tabletop Mountain, and
carried on business there for a few
years. The blacks were bad in
those days and there were many
anxious and trying times for the
settlers in the newly opened up
country. On the discoverey gold at
Normanby Mr and Mrs Gordon
left for that place, where they erect-
ed an hotel and kept it for two
years, and then left and took up a
selection by Euri Creek where they
were engaged in dairying. She
leaves three sons and five daughters
—Mr J. A. Gordon (Euri Creek),
Mr Alf Gordon (Euri Creek) Mr J.
Gordon (Bowen), Mrs W. Bostrom
Mrs Fogarty and Mrs Foy (Sydney)
Mrs Schilling (Bowen) and Mrs
Bracken (Proserpine), her husband
having predeceased her 23 years
ago. The funeral took place
in the afternoon, Rev. Robertson
(Church of England), officiating at
the graveside. Many wreaths and
letters of condolence were forward-
ed and the latter are still being re
ceived, one from Mr J. Gordon
from his fellow employees reading
as follows :—Dear Sir, I am direct-
ed by the pier employees Bowen
Jetty to convey to yourself and
relatives our expressions of sym-
pathy and condolence iri the recent
bereavement of your mother
