MR. WILLIAM JENKS.
A well known figure at St. John's Cathedral,
recently temporarily absent it was hoped,
will return no more. Mr. William Jenks,
who for the past 11 years has filled the office
of verger to the cathedral, succumbed last
evening to an attack of typhoid fever,
at the early age of 34 years.
He will be remembered by the worshippers at
St. John's for his genial manner, modest
bearing, and the faithful discharge of his
duties, by which he had endeared himself to a
wide circle of friends. He was a native of
York, England.

DEATH OF
MR ARTHUR JENKS
By the recent death of Mr Arthur
Jenks, at his residence, Central Street,
Mt Morgan lost one of its oldest and
most respected residents. Born in
York, England, 79 years ago, he came
to Queensland in the British Indian
Co's s.s. Jumna, landing at Rockhamp-
ton in 1889. He immediately removed
to Mt Morgan and secured work with
the Mt Morgan Gold Mining Co. as a
bricklayer in the building of the big
copper stack, which is still in use by
the present company. After completing
the stack he was appointed clerk of
works in connexion with the building
of the present Technical College and
Mt Morgan Post Office, two of Mt Mor-
gan's outstanding buildings. Later, in
the same capacity, he was sent to Bris-
bane and Toowoomba. For 43 years he
was a member of the Mt Morgan
Masonic Lodge, holding every office in
the lodge. For his work on the Mt
Morgan School of Arts Committee he
was made a life member. He was a
foundation member of the Manchester
Unity Oddfellows' Lodge, Mt Morgan,
and qualified for every chair of the
Order. In the early days af Mt Mor-
gan he was prominent in sport. He
was one of Mt Morgan's outstanding
Rugby footballers. He was one of those
chosen to play for Mt Morgan against
the English team, and represented Mt
Morgan in every interstate and inter-
town match. He excelled as a foot-
runner and won many handicaps. He
was for a number of years an alder-
man of the Mt Morgan Town Council
and was among those who was elected
and the last, by the vote of the rate-
payer, and not under the present sys-
tem. On his retirement from the
Mt Morgan Gold Mining Company's ser-
vice he undertook bricklaying con-
tracts and the making of pavement
tiles. Some of his good work can still
be seen on the pavement in front of
the Olympia Theatre, East Street. He
died a bachelor. Like his sisters, he
took a great interest in church of
England affairs. He was predeceased
by his three brothers, William, Thomas
and Harry, and one sister, all well
known in Mt Morgan in the early days
of the town. He is survived by one
brother, Alfred (New Zealand), and four
sisters, Mesdames C. Keily (Rockhamp-
ton), W. Wilkinson (Mt Morgan), and
Mrs J. Gofton (Townsville), and Miss
J. Jenks (Mt Morgan). His funeral,
which moved from his late residence,
was attended by many of his old
friends. Rev. Canon Fellowes read the
prayers at the house and at the grave-
side.
