Personal Notes:
OBITUARY
Mr. TIMOTHY MALONE
One of the oldest and most respected identities of the Tumut district in the person of Mr. Timothy Malone passed away at Tumut District Hospital on Wednesday, 13th July, fortified by the last rites of his church, being visited and consoled within the last few moments by Monsignor Sharkey. The subject of this obituary entered the Tumut and District Hospital on the previous day, but his passing came more suddenly than expected. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Malone, he was born on Tumut Plains and resided there until five years ago when he went to Blowering to live with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. F. J. Bourke, who lavished upon him the most devoted care and attention. Few daughters have given their aged parents more tireless attention than Mrs. Bourke, a fact that should be of great consolation in this time of sorrow. Until a few months ago he was remarkably agile for his years and until the last his memory remained active and clear, and he delighted in narrating many amusing episodes of his early life. Deceased was a most devout Catholic; his generosity to his church was unbounded and until the last few weeks of his life never missed a Sunday attending Mass. He was a foundation member of the Hibernian Society, being an office bearer for many years and was also a foundation member of the Holy Name Society. He was ever ready to give most generous support to all charitable appeals and his home on The Plains was ever a meeting place for the young folk. To the last he retained a keen interest in the youthful members of the community, ever giving practical advice and encouragement. As a neighbor he was always the first to give instant help and sympathy in the hour of need and in the celebration of a happy occasion his ready wit and expert chairmanship were ever in demand. In his youth the late Mr. Malone was a fine athlete, excelling in foot running and cricket. As a farmer his expert knowledge of husbandry enabled him to grow some of the best crops of tobacco, maize and millet ever seen in this district. He was a foundation member of the Tumut Turf Club and a committeeman for many years. He owned and trained many good horses, including such good performers as Monte, Ruby and Rattlesnake, whose triumphs included a Melbourne Cup Hurdle. The late Mr. Malone married Miss Bridget Howe, who predeceased him six years ago. Of a family of eleven, ten children are still living, the youngest daughter having died in infancy. Surviving members are Ted (Ryde), Mary (Sydney), Clare (Sister M. Carmel, Leeton), Tom (Tumut), Walter (Randwick), Les (Randwick), Nell (Mrs. McRae, Wagga), Gus (Tumut), Lucy (Mrs. F. Bourke, Blowering), Jack (Waverley). The three eldest sons served in the first World War, Walter being granted a commission on the field of battle for conspicuous bravery and at the cessation of hostilities toured as a member of the A.I.F. football team. Ted and Tom were both mentioned in despatches. Of a family of eight deceased was the last member. Mr. Malone's parents were married in Ireland, his mother's maiden name being Mary Bourke, and his eldest brother was some months old when they came to Australia. Of the family, Michael, John, Patrick, Edward, Bridget (Mrs. Mclnerney) and Francis, and a step-brother, Hugh McLeary, predeceased their brother. Requiem Mass was Celebrated on Thursday morning for the repose of his soul. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, leaving the Catholic Church for the new cemetery after prayers recited by Rev. Fr. Casey, who later officiated at the graveside. The funeral was one of the largest ever seen in Tumut, friends coming from far afield to pay a last tribute, to one of the grand old pioneers of Tumut. The funeral arrangements were conducted by J. C. McDonald, of Wagga. The casket was borne by six sons and the floral tray was carried by Frank Bourke (son-in-law), Edward Malone (grandson), Fred Malone and Frank Henery (nephews).
