The Tumut and Adelong Times 24 Jun 1941
OBITUARY Mr. Edward Malone Probably the oldest native-born of the Tumut district, Mr. Edward Malone, who would have attained his 86th birthday in October next, passed away in the Tumut and District Hospital on Friday last. Deceased was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Malone, of Tumut Plains. He followed farming pursuits all his life until 20 years ago, when he retired and went to live with his son Fred, a returned Digger, on the latter's farm at Tarrabandra, where he remained until entering hospital on June 8 with congestion of the lungs which developed into pneumonia, causing his death. He married Mary Ann Bourke, eldest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Bourke, of Wagragobilly, and to the union were born three sons : (Edward, Frederick and Ernest) and one daughter (Bridget, Mrs. Alfred Claffey, Tumut Plains Road). His wife predeceased him by 43 years, when the family were quite young. He was a man of towering stature and powerful physique, and when in town on the previous Wednesday to being taken ill at Tarrabandra looked the picture of health, was in gay spirits and facetiously made the remark that he would yet see a few of those his junior out. His sincerity and kindly disposition won friendship on all sides; he was never known to speak ill of any person and went through life always looking at the pleasant side of everything, and was genial at all times under any circumstances. It might be said that he got out of life the most of the good that comes to man. He was a fine sport, fond of horseracing and football. This was his first and last serious illness, so that his demise, so soon after his visit to town in good health, caused a great shock to his friend and relatives. It was on the previous Wednesday that he took a turn for the worse in hospital. Of the seven sons of the family of which he was one, only one remains, Mr Tim Malone of Tumut Plains, who also has passed his four-score years. The deceased brothers are Michael, John, Frank and Patrick Malone and Hugh McLary (step-brother), Mrs. M. McInerney sr. (Bridget) was the only sister. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, leaving, after Requiem Mass, from the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where the casketed remains had lain overnight, for the Roman Catholic portion of the Tumut Old Cemetery, where the burial took place alongside the grave of his late wife. Very Rev. Dean Sharkey officiated and Mr. H. W. Baker attended to the mortuary duties. The pallbearers were Messrs. Edward and Ernie Malone (sons), Frank Malone, Gus Malone, Frank McInerney and Paddy Bourke (nephews). To the bereaved the sympathy of the community is offered. |
