MARY MALANE nee Halloran
by Selma Malone Mary wished that Edmond would come home because she was frightened to be left after dark with only the children for company. But Edmond did not come. Mary Halloran had married Edmond Malone in her parish church of Bodyke Co. Clare lreland on 15th May 1848. Witnesses to the marriage were Michael and Judith Halloran. The Hallorans lived nearby at Clonmoher. Francis Halloran and his wife Mary McNamara, Mary's mother and father, leased a small farm of 34 acres in partnership with Walter Kennedy, in the townland of Lisbarreen. Edmond Malone, born in 1819, had come from Scariff, about 5 miles to the east, on the shores of Lough Derg. His father John Malone and mother Bridget O'Hara leased a small farm of 18 acres in the townland of Carrowmore about a mile east of Scariff. While still living in Clonmoher with the Hallorans Mary and Edmond's first child Michael was born. He was baptised in the church at Bodyke on 7 September 1849 and his sponsors were Francis and Margaret Halloran. The decision was made to move to Australia, leaving lreland to make a new life. Sailing on the Elizabeth they arrived on 16 April 1850. They could both read and write so that was a good start. Records show that Mary's mother was still alive at that time and also that John Halloran and Michael Halloran leased land in Lisbarreen in 1855 and it would seem likely that these were Mary's brothers who remained in lreland. At first they settled in Jugiong, having travelled south from Sydney, and stayed there for 2 years. Their second child, a daughter Bridget, was born at Jugiong in 1851. Perhaps it was the Big Flood in the Murrumbidgee in 1852 that forced them to move on to Tumut. A family storyteller relates that as they were leaving Jugiong in their wagon Mary remembered that she had left her second black dress behind. When she appealed to Edmond he replied "To be qure girl, there is only one Sunday in each week-just how many black dresses would you be needin'?" At first Edmond purchased land on the Goobragandra River at Tumut Plains. Later he was able to purchase more land on the Tumut River (the farm Homesdale still owned by the Malone family) and there Mary and Edward, as he was now known, made their home. Their family grew with John born in 1852, Francis 1854, Edward 1855, Mary Ann 1858, Timothy 1859 and Patrick 1860. Sadly baby MaryAnn only lived for a few days and because the river was in flood at the time, Edward and Mary were forced to bury her by the river at Tumut Plains. Three of Mary's brothers also came to Australia and finally settled in the Tumut District. Patrick and his wife Bridget landed in Perth in 1853 and after many adventures, including being shipwrecked, reached Tumut in 1863 via Adelaide and the gold fields and settled at Blowering. Thomas married Annie Kinealy and settled at Redbank Tumut Plains. Francis married Margaret Malone and settled at Lacmalac. Mysterious Disappearance: The Tumut correspondent of the Goulburn Chronicle writes-The only news of stirring interest which I can place before you, is the sudden disappearance from our midst of a benign and worthy man named Edward Malone. On Friday, the 17th instant, after transacting some business in town, he teft on horseback at about six o'clock p.m. from which time no clue to his whereabouts has been obtained, although large parties have searched with unremitting vigilance every river, lagoon and creek in the vicinity. On Saturday morning the mare on which he rode was found near home with the saddle on, and as the bridle was found near a number of deep lagoons, it is supposed he has breathed his last sigh in one of them, leaving behind him a wife and numerous family of young children to mourn his premature end. Sydney Morning Herald August 1860 25 Sepfember:'Goulburn Chronicle" repofts the finding of the remains of Edward Malone on the 14th instant close to the town, entangled midst roots of decayed trees lying in the river. lt is a certain amount of consolation to his bereaved relatives thus to recover his mortal remains and to have them interred within the precincts of a decent cemetery, instead of withering far away on some sandy beach or midst the mud at the bottom of the river. He was a popular man, respected and loved by all who knew him. (Tumut item) The Empire"-Tumut and Adelong in 1860 Mary was left with a farm and seven children aged from 11 to 1 years. In 1862 Mary married Hugh Mcleary who was a drover in the Tumut District and also carried supplies with his pack horses to the Kiandra gold fields. He was known in the district as "Hughie the Packer". They lived on the farm at Tumut Plains and their son Hugh was born in 1865. When Hugh Jnr married he and his wife lived on the farm with Mary and Hugh Snr. Mary Halloran -Malone- Mcleary died of heart disease on 26 August 1883 and is buried next to Edward in the Tumut Pioneer Cemetery. 150 years later many Tumut District families claim Mary Halloran as their Grandmother. |
