FREDERICK THOMAS QUARMBY.

On August 30, after a long, painful illness, borne very patiently, Mr. F. T. Quarmby passed away at his home in Bondi. Mr. Quarmby was born at Batlow, on the fourth of July, 1870, and spent his early life in Batlow, Adelong, and Tumut districts. At an early age he engaged in survey work, and for twenty-four years he travelled in various parts of the State in that capacity. Sixteen years ago he gave up surveying, and settled in business in the town of Wagga. From his childhood he was associated with the Methodist Church, and all through his itinerant life as surveyor, he kept in close touch with his church. When he made his home in Wagga, he, with his family, entered heartily into the work there, and their fine Christian hospitality will be cherished in the memory of many ministers and preachers who were privileged to share their home life. As an officer of the church, Mr. Quarmby was most devoted to the work and when, later, he was induced to accept the position of circuit steward of that important circuit, he brought to it all the business ability and the careful, wise administrative gifts he possessed. The circuit saw much progress during his term of office, largely because he coupled with his cheery optimism a measure of self-denying effort the practical outcome of large hearted faith. He was a humble, God-fearing, man, whose first duty was ever to his home. It was his great pride to point to a family of boys and girls, growing up— every one of them— in membership with the church, and one of them, Mr. Keith Quarmby, a very acceptable local preacher in our city pulpits.
He came, with his family, to reside in Bondi about eighteen months ago, having bought a business in Wellington Street. At once the family associated with our church here, and Mr. Quarmby was elected a church steward when the new circuit was formed. Though not widely known here, there are many who learned to regard him very highly, and during his illness he expressed himself as being deeply touched by the kindness of the many who came to see him.
Last year he entered the War Memorial Hospital for an operation, and it was confidently expected that the root of his trouble had been successfully dealt with. He enjoyed some months of splendid health, but about March there were symptoms of a trouble so deep-seated as to be beyond the skill of medical men. For months Mr. Quarmby bore his suffering uncomplainingly. He was cheery always, and many of us who came to try and do him good, always left with a sense that he had ministered to us. Never once did his faith in Christ waver, and all along his thoughts were for his devoted wife and others. He passed away on August 30, leaving a great testimony to the reality of Christian experience, a fine example of robust manly faith, and the gracious influence of one who lived the life he subscribed to in His creed. The interment took place at Rookwood. The Rev. J. W. Dains conducted the service. A widow, three sons, and two daughters survive him.
