OBITUARY MR. GEORGE JONES As was briefly announced in a previous issue, the death occurred at his residence in Sydney-st., Tumut, on Sunday last at 11 p.m. of Mr. George Jones, proprietor of the Newtown Store, at the age of 52 years. Deceased had been under the doctors's care for the last 12 months but had only been ill for the past five months, during which his health gradually failed. He was admitted to Valmar Private Hospital on September 11 and after eleven days in that institution returned home, where he was nursed by his wife and daughter Gwen, who is a trained nurse. His strength gradually ebbed and he passed peacefully away on Monday night. The late Mr. Jones was a son of the late Mr. Charles Jones of Tomorroma and of Mrs. Jones of Tumut, and was born at Tomorroma. In 1913 he joined the N.S.W. Police Force and during his 28 years in the Force the main towns in which he was stationed were Walgett, Dubbo, Cessnock, Curri Curri, Newcastle and Goulburn. He was stationed in the latter town in 1941, when he resigned from the Force and came to Tumut to enter business, purchasing the Newtown Store from Mr. Fred. L. Baker, who had previously taken over from Mr. P. Clee. He married Miss Florence Smith, of Coonamble, by whom he is survived together with his aged mother and four daughters and one son, viz. Olive (Mrs. Crocker), Beryl (Mrs. Andrews. Gwen (Mrs. Coyle), Thelma (Mrs. Taylor), of Sydney, and Trevor, of Tumut. There is also one sister, Mrs. F. Garner, of Tomorroma, surviving. One brother, Mr. Harry Jones, predeceased him. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon last, leaving from the Church of England after a short service conducted by Rev. S. Broadfoot for the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery. Rev. Broadfoot officiated at the graveside and Mr. C. W. Burt had charge of the mortuary ar rangements. The pall-bearers were Messrs. A. and D. Margules, Mark and Frank Garner (nephews), Mack French and George Jones (cousins). The many floral tributes which bestrew the coffin were a tacit tribute to the esteem and regard in which the late Mr. Jones was held in Tumut.
