Personal Notes:
GEORGINA MCDONNELL nee Kilminster
by Margaret McDonnell

Georgina Kilminster was born on 17 June 1852 at Albury, the fifth child of George and Elizabeth Kilminster nee Hillyer.

George Kilminster left County Down in 1834 and arrived in Sydney on 3 January 1835 on the vessel Benghal Merchant. He came as a "servant of the Government" for life, but had his ticket of leave when, as a 28 years old, he married Elizabeth Hillyer on 18 May 1844 at St.James Church in Melbourne. She was 23 years old and a free emigrant, who had arrived on
the Strathfieldsaye in 1841.Their marriage service was performed by the Rev. A.C.Thomson and witnessed by John Hume of the Hume River and R. Walton of Melbourne. They worked hard and by 1860, George was granted a General Publican's License for his pub, "The Plough lnn", which was stationed on the Gerogery Road near Albury. ln August of that year,
Elizabeth died of influenza and soon afterwards a heartbroken George advertised in the Border Posf for "The plough lnn" to be let. He was left behind to bring up seven children up. Their ages were between 15 and two years old, 1 child, a girl, having died at a young age. Another boy died shorily after Elizabeth.

ln December 1860, there was an advertisement in the paper, by his eldest son, Frank, for information on the whereabouts of George Kilminster, missing and last seen on December 27.|n January 1861, there was again a notice, about the body that had been found in the Murray River, that being of George Kilminster, death resulted from an accident.

Guardian of the children was a Jeffery Keatinge, Doctor at the time in Albury, witness to George's Publican's License, Edward's death, and guardian on Georgina's marriage certificate.

The other Kilminster children were:
Frank was born in 1845, worked for some years on the Telegraph line, through the centre of Australia with his horse-team, never married, died and was buried in Wagga on the 4 December 1919.
Emma born in 1846, married in 1863 to Wallace Browne of "Myall Station" near Yerong Creek, died on 8 April 1929 and was buried in Albury near her parents.
Mary was born in 1849, herfirst marriage was in 1868 to James Crichton of Holbrook, and her second marriage in
1895 to Henry Lovering, she died and was buried in Holbrook on 2 July 1910.
James was born in 1853, never married, died and was buried in Albury on 5 February,1879.
Edwin born in 1858, died and was buried in Albury on 12 April 1861.

Georgina was baptised on 27 June 1852, in the Church of England in Albury by the Rev Henry Elliott. On 5 November 1868, while working as a Domestic Servant on Ulupna Station near Ten Mile Creek (Holbrook) she gave birth to her first daughter, lsabell Stewart. On 13 February 1869, Georgina married her sweetheart, Charles Edward Stewart McDonnell in the Parsonage of the Wesleyan Church in Albury. Stewart, as he was called, was a stockman and a great horseman.

After their marriage they moved back to the Tumut area and on 6 August 1870, Mary Jane was born, followed by Jessie Elizabeth on the 18 May 1873; Aneas Colin on 14 October 1875', Georgina Reginald on 6 September 1877; Charles Edward Stewart on 18 October 1879.

They lived first at Bombowlee, where Stewart did some labouring work. ln the early 1880s they moved to Mundongo and stayed on the property of his mother, Mrs.Mary Carrigg, called Gouyack, near the old Bacon Factory. George Alexander was born there on 30 December 1881. ln December 1882, Stewart was one of the parents who were petitioning for a school to be built at Mundongo, so that his children could receive an education. Donald James Leslie was born at Mundongo on the 10 June 1884 and also Sydney Stewart who arrived on 9 August 1886.

They continued with their farming and Stewart his stockwork and boundary riding. He was a great horseman and liked to go to the mountains, where he caught wild crumbies to tame and sell. ln the late 1880's, Georgina and Stewart moved to Boundary Creek, at Billapaloola, in the vicinity of the present Cotterill's Road. Stewart did some prospecting for gold and there is also a legend in the family that at one stage, he and his brother, George, went to Sofala at the Turon River Diggings to continue their goldmining.

Clara Christina Margaret was born at Billapaloola on 27 November 1888. On I June 1891, the family was broken-hearted with the death of little George Alexander who died of an inflammation of the bowels. How deeply it had affected Georgina shows, as many years after her death, an envelope was found at the bottom of a box that had belonged to her. ln the envelope were a lock of hair and the belongings of a small boy (two coins) who was only nine years old when he died. That same year saw the birth of Arthur Alexander on 6 November 1891 and later of Rebecca (Ruby) on the 1 April 1894.

The family moved in the meantime to Argalong, where they took up a selection of 50 acres of land, under Torrens title. They built a house on the property near the creek and Stewart continued to show his superiority in horsemanship, as he took his horses to different places, where he entered them in showjumping contests. At the end of 1894 he met with an accident at Wagga, whilst he was showjumping and broke some ribs which penetrated one of his lungs. He was sent to Sydney, to Prince Alfred Hospital, where he had to have several operations. Georgina battled through all this with the help of the family. lsabell was married by that time and so was Mary Jane. Georgina used to ride down to Mary's place at Tumorrama, stay overnight whenever there was news from Stewart. Jessie was a great help at home to look after the little ones and Georgina kept in constant contact with Stewart in Sydney, writing letters with home news in it; that Charley was away working at Chrome mine at Wyangle and getting four shillings a day and 'find'; that Artie and Jack (Sydney) often asked about him and wished he was home before Christmas and that baby could sit up and had a tooth.

They could not have managed without the loving support and money that Uncle and Aunt, Thomas and Jane Lindbeck, sent up to Sydney for cures and treatment, but to no avail. Stewart returned to Tumut in January 1895 and stayed at his mother's house, where he tragically died on 13 February 1895, following complications.

Georgina battled on and found it very hard to keep going without relief and crown assistance. She continued to live at Argalong and in 1907, with the help of her sister, Emma Browne, she applied for an additional 150 acres of land, using the 50 acres as collateral. Her brother, Frank, helped her to move the house from the creek to where it is at present, although part of it is now pulled down. Georgina stayed there and raised the rest of the family on the property. To make a living to feed the children she used to work at Frank Halloran's place at Lac-ma-lac and made clothes for local shops, whilst also giving a lot of assistance to the neighbouring families
quite a few babies were born healthy, through her experienced help.

She went through the anguish of two of her sonS, Sydney and Arthur, going off to "the Great War". Both were injured and she was mistakenly informed that Sydney (Jack) had been killed in action. The relief must have been enormous when she found out the truth, that he had not been killed, but that his lungs were "only" damaged by mustard gas whilst in the trenches in France.

Georgina lived at Argalong until she died in 1932 at the age of 80 years, when she was laid to rest with her beloved husband, Stewart, at the old Pioneer Cemetery Tumut.

Married Stuart

The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950) Tue 18 Oct 1932
MRS STUART McDONELL
At Valmar Private Hospital, Tumut, on Friday last, another of the hardy old pioneers of the Tumut district crossed the Rubicon. Mrs Georgina McDonell, relief of the late Stuart McDonell, of Billapaloora, succumbing to asthma and bronchitis. Some six weeks ago she returned by car to Tumut from a trip to Sydney, where she spent a holiday with her two daughters, Mrs Stewart and Mrs Maurice French. She developed a severe cold on the way down, and went to reside with Mr. and Mrs Chas.Jones at Wagragobilly ; but the cold becoming worse she was brought into the hospital for special medical treatment. Her old age and the double nature of her complaint told against her and all that medical skill and careful nursing could do for her failed to retain the vital spark, and she passed away at 8 a.m. on Friday. A large family of sons and daughters born to her union with the late Stuart McDonell were reared to man's and woman's estate, only two of whom predeceased her. (Mrs Tom. Piper, of Bombowlee Creek; and George, Tumut). The survivors are: May (Mrs Chas. Jones, Wagragobilly), Jessie (Mrs Harry Lowther, "Lonedale," Mondongo), Colin Charles, Leslie (Tumut) Mrs Maurice French (Bankstown), John (Sydney), Margaret (Mrs L. Hilly, Muttama), Arthur (Tumut), Ruby (Mrs. Stewart, Sydney). Deceased was a kindly old lady, respected and esteemed by all who knew her, and her main desire in life was to see her children happy and prosperous, to which end she exerted all her efforts, through privations and vicissitudes that beset the pioneers. The funeral took place on Saturday, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Tumut Cemetery. Deceased was 80 years of age.
