Personal Notes:
OBITUARY
Mr. James Thompson
(From our own Correspondent)
I am sorry to have to record the death of one of Monaro's oldest pioneers, in the person of Mr. James Thompson, J.P.. of Cobbin Station, near Jindabyne, who breathed his last on Tuesday 15th instant (on the eve of the 62nd anniversary of his marriage).
Deceased was born on the sea during his parents voyage from England to New South Wales in September, 1823, [not true] and when but a lad was engaged in droving fat cattle from Monaro to Sydney for a Mr. Neale, father of the late Mr. John Neale, M.L.C.
In 1842 he settled on Monaro as manager for Mr. Neale, and three years later he married Margaret Kearns (sister of the late Mr. W. Kearns, of Adaminaby, and niece of the late Joseph Ward.
At that time churches were not thought of in Cooma and the ceremony took place at the residence of the late Mr. Kirwan in Lambie Street, Cooma. The late Father Kavanagh making a special visit to the district to perform the ceremony. A few years later Mr. Thompson rented Middlingbank Station and started on his own account and 55 years ago he bought Cobbin station, where he resided up till the time of his death.
No man was better known on Monaro 25 years ago, and there was no one more welcome at public gatherings, Mr. Thompson being of cheerful and jovial disposition and possessed a fund of ready wit.
Deceased was an ardent sport, and in those days would be present at almost every race meeting on Monaro his colours being often carried to victory by such horses as Jimboy, Starfish, King Tom, Goldfish, and others all of which are well remembered by old hands.
Mr. Thompson was always a straight-goer, who won for the honor of it, and the public were sure of a run for their money whenever his horses weighed out for a race.
Deceased was kind hearted and generous to a fault, and no traveller was ever allowed to pass his door hungry. It was he and the likes of him who made Monaro proverbial for its hospitality, he being one of the type who are unfortunately fast dying out, and whose places seem never to be filled.
Deceased must have been one of the oldest Justices of the Peace in the district, his appointment dating back 40 Years.
Mrs. Thompson survives her husband, and there are two sons and three daughters also living, the daughters being Mrs. W. Shiels (Dalgety), Mrs. C. O'Rourk (Jindabyne) and Mrs. C Pendergast (Omeo). There are four daughters deceased, viz., Mrs. W. Pendergast (Omeo) Mrs James Barry and Mrs Thomas Barry (Moonbah) and Miss I. Thompson.
There are over 60 grandchildren besides a large number of great and great great grandchildren.
Archibishop Kelley, on his visit to Moonbah a short time since, visited the old gentleman, and administered the last rites of the church to him.
The writer had the privilege of being a personal friend of the deceased for 40 years, and can sincerely sympathise with his family in their loss for a kinder husband and father never drew breath.
The remains were interred in the Moonbah R.C Cemetery on Thursday and the funeral was one of the largest ever seen here, people coming from Cooma, Berridale, and all the surrounding parts to pay their kast tribute of respect to one of Monaro's oldest whitest pioneers.
Vale James Thompson
