| Personal Notes: |
|
John Thompson left Liverpool aboard the Lavinia on the 10th June 1832 accompanied by his wife Elizabeth (nee Webster) two sons and a niece named Ann. After calling at Cape Town and Hobart, the Lavinia arrived at Port Jackson on 6th December 1832.
Elizabeth apparently died during the voyage out. However it seems that the ships captain did not record her death at sea in the ships papers lodged upon the Lavinia's arrival in Sydney, probably because he had no desire to be held up at the North Shore quarantine station. The service of wool expert John Thompson was immediately snapped up by Edward Cox snr of Fernhill, Mulgoa. At Fernhill, Cox's wife Jane nee Brooks quickly became a second mother to eleven-year-old William Barber Thompson, as well as his younger brother (James) and a girl cousin. For the next few years, the Thompson offspring grew up with the Cox children. Edward King Cox was then a three-year old and Richard Cox was a baby. John Thompson became Edward Cox's right-hand man and was responsible for the wool management and classing of Cox's extensive flocks at Fernhill, Mulgoa and Burrundulla at Mudgee; also, the Bathurst and Rylstone flocks, particularly those at the Rawdon station on the Upper Cudgegong River, where John Thompson eventually made his home. Inscription Our days on earth are as a shadow. And there is none abiding. Gravesite Details 79y; h/Elizabeth; father |
