Daughter of Joseph P. & Mary.
'At Cooma, on the morning of the 29th of September ultimo, Mary, the beloved wife of Mr. James Hain, aged 52 years, leaving an affectionate husband and six children, and a large circle of friends to lament their loss. Deceased was a native of Norton-under-Ham, in the county of Somerset, England. Happily it seldom falls to our lot to have to record the decease of any of the inhabitants of this district, so renowned for its salubrity. Last week, however, the wife of Mr. James Hain died, and was interred in the burial ground attached to Christ Church. What makes this case the more remarkable was the manner in which the funeral was conducted, which was so very different from the usual exhibitions on such occasions. The body of the deceased was borne from the house to the church, a distance of fully two miles, on the shoulders of some of the neighbours, preceded by the minister of the parish and the doctor. The Police Magistrate and three other gentlemen acted as pall bearers, the husband and six children of the deceased, accompanied by a large number of friends, walking immediately after the corpse. The mournful procession as it wended its way slowly up the valley, reminded us strongly of similar scenes, witnessed many years ago in our old country villages in England, and we cannot but hope that the example set on this occasion will, for the future, be followed, whenever possible. Another hopeful feature of this funeral which deserves to be recorded, was the entire absence of all the excesses usually attendant on a funeral or wake in this part of the country'.
