MR. STEPHEN EDWARD WHITE.

Quite a gloom was cast over the town and district when word was passed around that Mr. Steve White, of "Dinyah," Cootamundra, died. He underwent a serious operation on Monday, at "Clarmore,'' Darlinghurst, and came out of it well, but subsequently a haemorrhase set in. Relatives and friends were called to the bedside. Telephone inquiries made Cootamundra friends feel very uneasy about the chances of recovery. Then, following an encouraging bulletin as to a slight improvement, came word of a relapse; and at 9.30 on Wednesday night the end came.
A more popular man than "good old Steve White" this district has never known; and it is hard to realise that we shall see him no more; motoring into town or, chatting in his delightful way with friends in the street, in the stock agents' offices, at the club, or in the home.
Deceased was born 66 years ago, at 'Merribindinyah,' a few miles out from Bethungra. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Steve White, pioneers of that property; and the younger Steve afterwards acquired the place. He married Miss Nellie Hubbard, then a resident of Gundagai, who survives him. There was no family, but on the death of his brother Joe; the latter's three daughters, Misses Harrie, Laurie, and Bay lived with Mr. and Mrs. Steve. They are now respectively, Mrs. Alan Scott, Cootamundra; Mrs. Eric Smith, Bethungra; and Mrs. Geof. Hooper, Ironbong — all, in turn, on the land.

Selling 'Merribindinyah, deceased made a tour of the world, with Mrs. White, and two of the girls, and, on returning tried to adopt the seaside life, living at Kirribilli; . but there was ever the urge to go back on the land, so he returned to the old district, bought from the late Mr. R. Withycombe, 'O.K' four miles, out from Cootamundra, on the Kilrush road, and re-named it, 'Bindinyah.'
He sold this property to Dr. Finley, of Temora, and next bought, only 13 months ago, 'Rose Farm' 3 miles on the opposite side of Cootamundra, from the estate of the late Mr. Skamp, land originally selected by the late founder of the Corby family in this distrlct. Mr. White turned 'Rose Farm into 'Dinyah', had the home again re-designed and decided that the only other change he could make would be to a place to be named "Yah." However, any further future plans were cut off by the untimely end on Wednesday.

It would be hard to find words to adequately pay tribute to his interesting personality and lovable disposition. Everyone liked him; everyone loved to meet him; no one ever got tired of talking to him. If a few gathered together, and 'S.W.' was there, he was the life of the party; with his droll humor, and an interesting style of expressing it. "What a kindly world it would be,'' remarked a dear old life-long friend yesterday, 'if there were a lot of Steve Whites in it!' And that in itself speaks volumes.
Two inseparable mates were Messrs. Steve White and Mat. Sawyer. It was so from boyhood days, when they each lived either side of the village of Bethungra; and one of those to be at bedside at the last was Mr. Sawyer. Both very fond of the turf, they raced horses together, and were associated in the clubs. Mr. White was on the Cootamundra Turf Club for many years, always on the Picnic Race Committee, and for many years a committeeman of the S.D.R.A. He was a member of the A.J.C. and M.T.C. One to deceased's fine horses, Aldrie, was lent to the Prince whilst in Sydney. Mr. and Mrs. Steve White, sen., were buried in the Anglican cemetery at Mltta, alongside the church of which the younger Steve was a churchwarden for 26 years. The Whites practically built that church. A brother, Joe and also Joe's son Bob, are buried there; also his brother, Reg. and his sister Annie (Mrs. Cowley). And that is where the remains of the subject of our notice were laid to rest this morning. The body had been brought from Sydney, taken to the Anglican church, Bethungra, and the funeral left there for Mittia at 11 this morning.
From Cootamundra alone thirty wreaths were sent out.

Despite inches of rain, the attendance at the funeral was very large, indeed— a great manifestation of appreciation of a departed friend, and token of sympathy with the grief stricken ones. Fifty cars arrived at the cemetery. Rev. H. Staples, rector of Junee officiated.
Two brothers survive- Mr. Jack White, of 'Grose Vale;'' Richmond, and Mr. Aub. White, Goulburn, whilst sisters are Mrs. Charles Atwood, Sydney; Mrs. Hast Beveridge, Sydney; Mrs. Alec. McDonald, Goulburn; . Mrs. J. Large, Cootamundra; and Mrs. Malacharane, Sydney. One sister, Mrs. Plunkett, died in Queensland.

To the widow and other relatives the 'Herald' extends the deep sympathy of a host of friends in the Cootamundra district.

MRS. ELLEN CATHERINE WHITE
Mrs. E. C. White, aged 70, of "Dinyah," Berthong-road, Cootamundra widow of the late Mr. Steve
White, who died in 1931, has passed away whilst away in Sydney, staying with two single sisters at Collaroy. Mrs. White contracted influenza, which turned to pneumonia and she passed away at 8 o'clock on Tuesday morning. The remains were cremated in Sydney, and the ashes are being taken to the Anglican cemetery at Mitta to be buried in the grave of her husband.

The Whites were of the pioneer family in the Bethungra-Mitta district. The late Mr. Steve White's father, Mr. Steve White, snr., took up "Merribindinyah," a famous pastoral holding, which eventually was owned by the younger Steve, who sold it in 1922, and went for a trip to England, accompanied by his wife and two nieces. Then he tried to enjoy retirement in Sydney, but found the call of the country the stronger, he acuqired a property on the Kilrush-road, near
Cootamundra, and called it, in memory of the old home, "Bindinyah." Later he sold there, and bought the original home of the Corby-family, on Berthong-road, close to Cootamundra, and called it "Dinah," where the subject of our notice had resided since.

Mrs. White's maiden name was Hubbard, and her husband first met her when she resided at Gundagai with her sister, whose husband, the late Mr. Forsyth, was teacher there.
The late Mr. Josiah White, who occupied part of "Merrinbindinyah," married another sister (Clara), who died. The only brother of deceased, Harold, also died. Other surviving sisters are Misses-Mary and Gertrude Hubbard, of Collaroy; and Mrs. John Reid, Cremorne (her late husband was a Sydney architect) ; and Mrs. John Arnott, Gordon.

The late Mr. and Mrs. Josiah White had a family of three girls and two boys—Harrie, Paul, Laurie, Bay, Bob (deceased). Mrs. White mothered the three girls, who later married respectively; Mr. Allen Scott (who manages "Dinyah") , Mr. Eric Smith. "The Forest", Bethungra, and Mrs. Geoff. Hooper, "Oak Hill", Bethungra.
