Cootamundra Herald (NSW : 1877 - 1954) Saturday 9 December 1893 p 9 Article
Death of Mrs.W.Cowley.
We learnt with deep sorrow on Wednesday morning of the death, of Mrs. William Cowley, at Temora, which had occurred on the preceding night. It appears to have occurred without previous warning. She had been confined, and was speaking to her nurse with satisfaction as to her condition, when she suddenly fainted. After the nurse could not get her a drink of water or anything to revive her she died. The news of her death cast a gloom over the town of Temora, as it did in Cootamundra and Bethungra.

The deceased lady was the eldest daughter of Mr.and Mrs. Stephen White, of Merribindinyah, and sister to Mrs. J. Large, A. Attwood, and A. McDonell, of Cootamundra. She was 35 years of age, and leaves four children, including the one born just prior to her death, a strong healthy infant. The eldest is a daughter 14 years old, the third a son 8 years old.

In spite of very short notice there was a very large funeral on Thursday, including friends and sympathisers from all parts, some even from Tumut. Her remains wore buried in the cemetery at Bethungra, and the Rev Canon Betts (Church of England), from Cootamundra, read the burial service. A great number of floral wreaths, dictated by kindly hearts and made by skillful hands to decorate the coffin, covered in the grave what was left of a much beloved wife and respected lady. We extend our warmest sympathy to Mr. Cowley and to Mr. and Mrs. White and their family.

Mr. and Mrs. White publicly express their thanks for the extreme kindness and sympathy shown them in their bereavement.

Cootamundra Herald, N.S.W.Wednesday, 1st January, 1902
Death of Mr. R. V. White. — It is known to our readers that Mr. Reginald Victor White, the youngest son of Mr. Stephen White, sen., of Merribindinyah, had been ailing for a couple of years from a spinal affection. From this cause he gradually sank and died on Saturday. He was only 18 years old, and was an athletic lad until he fell a victim to his fatal malady.
His complaint was of such a nature that an operation to be successful was almost an impossibility. The funeral was held on Sunday, the remains being interred in tho church yard at Mitta Mitta, the first grave within the grounds; and there was a large gathering of the family relations, friends, and neighbours, and people from distant parts, notwithstanding the fact that bush fires were raging furiously about the country a little to the south of Mitta Mitta.

Canon Studs (Church of England) conducted a solemn service and gave an impressive address in the church. We offer our kindly sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. White and their family and friends and feel sure that the public join us in doing so.

bidinyah Station, near Junee, died on
Friday afternoon, from senile decay,
at the age of 88 years. With this

Lovatt and about a dozen years ago
was married a second time to Miss
McDonald, who still survives him. He

Mrs. H. B. Beveridge, of Junee, and
Mrs. J. D. McKinnon, of Old Junee.
Deceased was a keen sportsman and at
one time kept a number of race
horses.
Merribidinyah Station was taken up
by the deceased's father, also named
Stephen, in 1842 or 1843 and the place
has been occupied by the family up
to the present time, though most of

MR. JOS1AH WHITE.

It was quite a shock to the Cootamundra people; as to ourselves, the news of the death of Mr. Josiah White, second son of the grand old Mr. Stephen White. Heart failure was the immediate cause of the death of young Mr. White, accelerated doubtless by the heat.

Death is busy with his cycle, even in the agricultural harvest field. - The late Mr. White was in his prime, being 48 years of age; and he was twice married and leaves a large family(nine children).
Mrs. White and her children are well provided for, 'deceased having a large share of the original pastoral properly, besides his life being well assured. He learnt this lesson young from parental influence of providence and assurance.

Survivors of the family are his brothers Stephen E, John and Aubrey, his sisters Mrs. J.S. Large (Cootamundra), Mrs. McDowell (Goulburn), Mrs. C. Attwood -(Gunnedah, formerly of Cootamundra), Mrs. Mylecharane (of the city) and Mrs. H. B Beveridge(Junee).

The funeral was largely attended.

MRS. FLORENCE BEVERIDGE
Old friends wiil regret to hear of the death of the late Mrs. Hastings Beveridge of 'Dollar Vale' of the Junee district. Mrs Beverldge had been In a private hospital in Darlinghurst and had undergone operations. The end, which was expected, came at 11 o'clock on Saturday night and was a relief to much suffering borne with splendid fortitude.

Deceased was formerly Miss Florence White and was born at Merribindinyah' near Bethungra-being a daughter of the late Mr. S. White and sister of Mr. S. E. White who died a few months ago.

The remaining members of the old 'Merriblndinyah' family are Mr. Jack White of 'Gross Vale', Hawkesbury district, Mrs. John Large, Mrs. Charles Atwood, Mrs. Charles McDonald and Mrs. Malachrane.

The subject of our notice finished her education at the private school of Miss. Lange and Mrs. Lowe daughters of the late Dr. Large). She was a prominent personality In the earlier social life of Cootamundra, Gundagal, and Junee and In those days when the 'Bell of the Ball' would be mentioned Flo White was frequently the popular choice. Her geniality at old Merribindinyah and later as the hostess at 'Dollar Vale'' will long, be remembered.

She was a fine singer, and helped willingly at many a concert in the district. She was a prominent worker for the Anglican Church and the Red Cross Society, and the charities of Junee and district until her illness compelled her, regretfully, to forego such activities.
She leaves two daughters; Mrs. Fred. Beverldge, of Blllabong; and Mrs. Harrls of Manly. She also leaves two sons.
The Interment was set down for 2 o'clock this afternoon, in the Anglican cemetery at Junee.

MR. STEPHEN EDWARD WHITE.

Quite a gloom was cast over the town and district when word was passed around that Mr. Steve White, of "Dinyah," Cootamundra, died. He underwent a serious operation on Monday, at "Clarmore,'' Darlinghurst, and came out of it well, but subsequently a haemorrhase set in. Relatives and friends were called to the bedside. Telephone inquiries made Cootamundra friends feel very uneasy about the chances of recovery. Then, following an encouraging bulletin as to a slight improvement, came word of a relapse; and at 9.30 on Wednesday night the end came.
A more popular man than "good old Steve White" this district has never known; and it is hard to realise that we shall see him no more; motoring into town or, chatting in his delightful way with friends in the street, in the stock agents' offices, at the club, or in the home.
Deceased was born 66 years ago, at 'Merribindinyah,' a few miles out from Bethungra. He was the eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Steve White, pioneers of that property; and the younger Steve afterwards acquired the place. He married Miss Nellie Hubbard, then a resident of Gundagai, who survives him. There was no family, but on the death of his brother Joe; the latter's three daughters, Misses Harrie, Laurie, and Bay lived with Mr. and Mrs. Steve. They are now respectively, Mrs. Alan Scott, Cootamundra; Mrs. Eric Smith, Bethungra; and Mrs. Geof. Hooper, Ironbong — all, in turn, on the land.

Selling 'Merribindinyah, deceased made a tour of the world, with Mrs. White, and two of the girls, and, on returning tried to adopt the seaside life, living at Kirribilli; . but there was ever the urge to go back on the land, so he returned to the old district, bought from the late Mr. R. Withycombe, 'O.K' four miles, out from Cootamundra, on the Kilrush road, and re-named it, 'Bindinyah.'
He sold this property to Dr. Finley, of Temora, and next bought, only 13 months ago, 'Rose Farm' 3 miles on the opposite side of Cootamundra, from the estate of the late Mr. Skamp, land originally selected by the late founder of the Corby family in this distrlct. Mr. White turned 'Rose Farm into 'Dinyah', had the home again re-designed and decided that the only other change he could make would be to a place to be named "Yah." However, any further future plans were cut off by the untimely end on Wednesday.

It would be hard to find words to adequately pay tribute to his interesting personality and lovable disposition. Everyone liked him; everyone loved to meet him; no one ever got tired of talking to him. If a few gathered together, and 'S.W.' was there, he was the life of the party; with his droll humor, and an interesting style of expressing it. "What a kindly world it would be,'' remarked a dear old life-long friend yesterday, 'if there were a lot of Steve Whites in it!' And that in itself speaks volumes.
Two inseparable mates were Messrs. Steve White and Mat. Sawyer. It was so from boyhood days, when they each lived either side of the village of Bethungra; and one of those to be at bedside at the last was Mr. Sawyer. Both very fond of the turf, they raced horses together, and were associated in the clubs. Mr. White was on the Cootamundra Turf Club for many years, always on the Picnic Race Committee, and for many years a committeeman of the S.D.R.A. He was a member of the A.J.C. and M.T.C. One to deceased's fine horses, Aldrie, was lent to the Prince whilst in Sydney. Mr. and Mrs. Steve White, sen., were buried in the Anglican cemetery at Mltta, alongside the church of which the younger Steve was a churchwarden for 26 years. The Whites practically built that church. A brother, Joe and also Joe's son Bob, are buried there; also his brother, Reg. and his sister Annie (Mrs. Cowley). And that is where the remains of the subject of our notice were laid to rest this morning. The body had been brought from Sydney, taken to the Anglican church, Bethungra, and the funeral left there for Mittia at 11 this morning.
From Cootamundra alone thirty wreaths were sent out.

Despite inches of rain, the attendance at the funeral was very large, indeed— a great manifestation of appreciation of a departed friend, and token of sympathy with the grief stricken ones. Fifty cars arrived at the cemetery. Rev. H. Staples, rector of Junee officiated.
Two brothers survive- Mr. Jack White, of 'Grose Vale;'' Richmond, and Mr. Aub. White, Goulburn, whilst sisters are Mrs. Charles Atwood, Sydney; Mrs. Hast Beveridge, Sydney; Mrs. Alec. McDonald, Goulburn; . Mrs. J. Large, Cootamundra; and Mrs. Malacharane, Sydney. One sister, Mrs. Plunkett, died in Queensland.

To the widow and other relatives the 'Herald' extends the deep sympathy of a host of friends in the Cootamundra district.

MRS. E. V. LARGE
Another of the old and respected pioneer residents has gone— Mrs.Emily Vine Large (widow of the late Mr. John Seward Large), of Sutton street, Cootamundra, aged 76 years.
The deceased had always enjoyed the best of health, but early on Monday morning suffered a stroke. She was immediately removed to a private ward in the District Hospital. Despite the best of medical attention and nursing, she, gradually sank, passing away at 6.20 on Wednesday evening.

Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. Steve White, sen., of 'Merrlbindinyah,' near Bethungra, in which village she was married, later removing to Cootamundra, where her late husband, a son of the late Dr.Large, was an auctioneer. She lived practically the whole of her life in the Bethungra and Cootamundra districts.

Surviving brothers of deceased are: Messrs. Aub. White (Burgooney), and J. H. White (Grose Vale).
Brothers who predeceased her were:
Messrs Steve White, jun.('Dinyah'),
J. White('Merribindinyah'), and
Reg.White('Merrlblndinyah').
The surviving sisters are Mrs. Charles E. Attwood (Sydney), and Mrs. Malacharane (Sydney).
Sisters who died were:
Mrs. A. Cowley,
Mrs. T.Plunkett,
Mrs. A. McDonnell (Goulburn),
Mrs. H. B. Beveridge ('Dollar-vale,' Junee).
Deceased had a family of seven children, all of whom survive her—
Messrs Will Large (Canterbury),Steven (Cootamundra), Jack (Cootamundra), and Reg. (Cootamundra);
Mrs. W. Brown (Belmore), Mrs. W.Peacock (Taree), and Miss Lily Large (Manly). There are eight surviving grandchildren.

A short service was held at Christ Church yesterday afternoon, prior to the funeral. Rev. Canon D. Sherris feelingly referred to the Christian life of the departed lady, one who had materially and beneficially assisted the community in the pioneering stages, and one who set anexample which all might follow.

All members of deceased's family were at the service. The funeral was a large and most representative one, many prominent town and district residents paying their last tribute to a good citizen and a kindly friend.

The casket, covered with beautiful floral tributes, was borne to the graveside by Messrs. W. Large, S. Large, R. Large, and W. Brown. The interment was in the Churchof England portion of the cemetery, alongside the remains of her husband.

Canon Sherris delivered a sympathetic address at the graveside. And so here has left us one of our most esteemed and kindly disposed citizens. The name of Large has ever been worthily associated with this district, and many will extend to the bereaved family their sincere sympathy in their hour of sorrow. Deceased, was a lover of nature, and was generally to be found attending to the floral plots in her picturesque garden. There will ever remain the memory of the warm welcome, the cheery word and the kindness and consideration extended by her. She will be sadly missed, but a worthy family of seven young Australians remain to
carry on the good and noble endeavours of their respected parents.
