MRS. LOUISA COWLEY
An old resident of Tenterfield,
Mrs. Louisa Cowley, died last
Thursday after a short illness.
The late Mrs. Cowley was a
native of Queanbeyan, and was
born in 1865. She was an adopted
daughter of the late Capt. E. M.
Battye, superintendent of Police,
Albury, where she lived as a child,
and where 59 years ago last Christ-
mas Eve she was married to Mr.
Percy Cowley. The early part of
their married life was spent in Al-
bury and Upper Murray districts.
They came to Tenterfield 45 years
ago, and except for two short
periods spent in Murwillumbah and
Lismore, they resided in Tenterfield
during that period. There were 10
children of the marriage—seven
daughters and three sons, three of
whom are deceased. They are: Nor-
man (deceased), Mrs. Pollock
(Brisbane), Leila (deceased), Eric
(on active service), Amy (deceased),
Jack (Sydney), Mrs. A. Joubert
(Lismore), Mrs. Christie (Mosman),
Consie (2nd Ambulance Coy.), and
Jean (Tenterfield). There are 10
grandchildren.
Deceased's sister, Lady Bridges,
wife of Gen. Sir W. T. Bridges, and
brother, Mr. Arthur Francis, pre-
deceased her some years. Two step-
sisters, Mrs. Braithwaite (New Zea-
land) and Miss Thwaites (Rose
Bay), survive.
