TUMUT NEWS. [FROM THE TUMUT TIMES}
July, 29.— As we had anticipated, the funeral of the late Mr. Angus Rankin, on Friday last, was of an imposing character. Two carriages containing four of the clergy preceded the hearse, and as the cortege passed slowly along Bombowlee it was augmented at every cross road by numerous vehicles and horsemen until the procession became one of the largest we have witnessed in Tumut for a long time past. The gathering was truly a representative one of all classes and all creeds, joined in the throng to testify their respect for the deceased and sympathy with the bereaved. In passing the Church of England the church-bell tolled, as did also the bell of the Catholic Church, when the funeral came in sight. All the business houses and hotels in town were closed as the cortege passed through. At the cemetery the obsequies were performed by the Revs. Fathers Finke, Finn and Donovan ... Gundagai to attend the funeral and among the throng of mourners around the grave were Rev H. . E. Thompson (Anglican), and the Rev. Alex Mackenzie (Presbyterian).

- Notes: Rankin brothers and their family came from Scotland by the ship Martin Luther, landing in Melbourne in 1849. The brothers were;

> Angus Rankin (married a Miss McDonald)
> Neil Rankin (married Reginald McDonald)
> George Rankin (married a Miss O'Neill),
> Ronald Rankin (married a daughter of the of England Minister, Rev McKenzie)
> John Rankin (married a Mrs. Anderson, a widow, whose grandson became Prime Minister of Australia and who, later, became Lord Stanley Melbourne Bruce).

They remained in Melbourne for a short period and then purchased sheep, bullocks and drays and with their mother and Neil's wife Reginalda, set out driving their herd on the long journey to Louth on the Darling River. They encountered enormous dffiiculties throughout the journey. There were no yards to hold the stock at night and consequently a twenty-four hour watch had to be kept. Eventually, when they reached their run. They called the station "Borara".

The Rankins remained on the Darling River for a couple of years but the Aborigines there proved hostile, making several vicious attacks on the homestead. The women became fearful for their safety and in 1853 the whole family abandoned the station and made their way to Tumut. Settling at Bombowlee in 1854 they acquired the property known as Bombowlee Station from the Estate of the late William Shelley and proceeded to make the greater part of it into freehold title.

When the Rankins arrived their first visitors were Captain George MacDonald of Adjungbilly, a close relative of Mrs. Neil Rankin, and Leopold Fane DeSalis of Darbalara, who was Captain MacDonald's son-in-law.

After a little while Neil Rankin separated from the partnership and purchased Brungle Station from Bray Brothers and also "Wagra" from Henry Osborne, but he still retained an interest in some of the hill country of Bombowlee Station.

The Rankin brothers were progressive men and in 1863 purchased "Ballandry" in the Riverina.[The name Rankin's Springs seems to have appeared in official records sometime prior to 1870. It seems likely that the name came from the Rankin family who came from Tumut in 1863 and found the spring at about that time.] On the l2th January 1865 Neil Rankin died [Neil Rankin is buried in the Tumut Pioneer Cemetery.] and his young son Donald Charles Rankin and a manager named McDonald carried on the affairs of the Estate, but, owing to mismanagement, flrst Wagra and then Brungle had to be sold.

Because of deaths in the family Bombowlee Station ultimately became the property of Angus Rankin, then varied circumstances brought it under the control of Dalgety & Co.. Mrs. Angus Rankin remained on the station until 1906 when it was subdivided and sold by auction.

Andrew Lynch became the owner of the homestead block and a considerable portion of the station. Neil Rankin's property was not involved. lt was subsequently sold to a Mrs. Sellars, a daughter of Neil. One of her daughters, Clara Rankin, married Edward Charles Brown, the eldest son of Edward George Brown, M.L.A.

Ronald Rankin, John Rankin and Angus Rinkin died at Tumut and are burried in the Catholic portion of the Pioneers Cemetery.
