DEATH OF MR ROBT HAYDEN
Yet another of the pioneers of the Tumut district crossed the Rubicon on Tuesday, when Mr. Robert Hayden, of Argalong, died at his residence at the age of 78 years. He had been ailing for many months, but only lately had to take to his bed, just prior to which he visited Tumut and consulted Drs. Browne and Clouston. Deceased was a native of the district, being one of the well-known old family of Hayden, only one of whom (Mrs. Carr sr., of Herbert-st.) survive, but, descendants of whom are numerous. As a young man he was employed in the Adelong gold mines, and about 40 years ago selected at Argalong, where he lived the rest of his well spent life. He was known as the miner's and bushman's benefactor ; no one passed his door who needed help of sustenance without his assistance or partaking of his hospitality, and in cases of sickness, accident or bereavement he was amongst the first to be on the scene to afford alleviation to the afflicted or distressed, distance or weather being no deterrant to the fulfilment of what he considered his obligations to his fellow humans. He was a true and staunch friend and a genial companion, a hard toiler and upright in all his dealings. He belonged to the M.U. Oddfellows. He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Fitzgerald, sister of Mrs. W. Masters, of Tumut. There was no issue. His second wife was Miss Halloran, sister of the late Mr. Frank Halloran, of Lacmalac. A son (Frank) and a daughter (Miss Maggie) were the result of the union, and these only, with his widow and sister (Mrs Carr sr) are left to mourn their bereavement. The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the new cemetery, Rev. Fr. Kinnane performing the last sad rites at the graveside and Mr. Jas. Elphick carrying out the mortuary arrangements.
