Mary Ann Budd was born in London England - daughter of Robert Budd (or Buddle) and Jane Sutcliffe. Mary Ann was found guilty of stealing on 27th April 1822 and was sentenced to 7 years transportation at the age of supposedly 14 years on 22nd May 1822 at Middlesex, England. She arrived in Port Jackson on the ship 'Lord Sidmouth', arriving 27th Feb 1823. It sailed from England on 11th Sept 1822 from Woolwich in 169 days. 97 female prisoners embarked.
On 14th January 1824 she requested permission to marry her first husband Benjamin Harmer (Colonial Secretary Index, 1788-1825). they married 14th January 1824 at St Phillips, Sydney Cove. Mary was granted her Certificate of Freedom on 23 July 1829 (State Records of NSW).1 12345. Mary Ann and Benjamin Harmer had three children, Benjamin b. 1825c - d. ?; William, b. 1829 - d. 1889 and Mary Jane b. 1833 - d. 1874. Benjamin Harmer died 18th December 1833. In 1836 she married William Hayden. They had 6 children, Emma b. 1835 - d. 1868; Hannah Johanna b. 1837 - d. 1903; John b. 1840 - d. 1920; Mary Ann b. 1842 - d. 1928 and Henry b. 1843 - d. 1882. |
