James Hayden (aka Haydon / Haden / Hadon) was a convict of the Third Fleet. In 1788 he was convicted at Stafford Assizes, England, and sentenced to a term of 7 years. Transported in the ship Matilda, which departed from Portsmouth on 27th March 1791, he arrived in Port Jackson (Sydney), New South Wales, on 1st August 1791. Soon after arrival, James and many other convicts from the Matilda were transferred to the ship Mary Ann and sent to Norfolk Island; James remained there until being transferred back to Sydney by the ship Supply, on 8th April 1796.
He entered into a common-law marriage with convict Mary Keen, aka Jane Kane, possibly by sometime around 1803. In 1811, he was promised a grant of 30 acres of land at Airds (near Campbelltown) by Governor Lachlan Macquarie; the grant was confirmed on 18th January 1817. James died on 24th September 1820, "aged 58 years", and was buried on the 25th at the cemetery of St Luke's Anglican Church, Liverpool, some 24km north of Airds (Burial Register facsimile at www.ancestry.com.au/imageviewer/collections/61177/images/45578_liv^co18111823-00039 ). This church had only opened in the previous year and would most likely have been the nearest consecrated burial ground to Airds. The township of Campbelltown was not founded by Governor Macquarie until 1st December 1820. In the year of James's death, his widow took their children and had them —and herself— baptised with the surname Hayden (possibly to solidify the inheritance of James's land grant). Some of the children's descendants retained the spelling of their surname as "Hayden", while certain other branches later changed to the spelling "Haydon". Jane Hayden remarried in 1823, to a Mark Millington. When Jane Millington died in 1853, presumably by her will she had a cenotaph inscription for her first husband, James, placed above hers on her headstone at St Peter's churchyard in Campbelltown. That James is not actually buried at St Peter's Campbelltown is mentioned in a book entitled A Stroll Through St Peter's Churchyard, published by the Campbelltown and Airds Historical Society in 1983. This is also supported by the fact that in September 1820 neither Campbelltown nor St Peter's church existed: the church was built between 1821 to 1823, and its cemetery was established in 1822 (its earlist known burial dates to 1823). Having only 30 acres implied he had no wife and no children ie…He wasn’t married. Mark Millington at the time must have been married.
