Son of James Hayden, a convict who arrived in Sydney with the Third Fleet in 1791.
Monaro Pioneers — HARRY HAYDEN. In connection with the early history of this district, the name of Harry Hayden stands out very prominently, as one of its first settlers. The old property his son Charles now holds, known as Hayden Park (Hayden's Bog, as it was sometimes called, though there is nothing of the bog about it now), is some of the best pastoral land in the district. I have said a good deal in praise of this comparatively unknown and neglected corner of New South Wales, but I think no more glowing evidence could be furnished in its favour than the fact that the station holding since 1826 has never changed hands — it is still hold by the descendants of its first occupier. The present manager and part owner, Mr. A. H. Jeffreys, is a great grandson of the first lessee. The adjoining little property — Hayden Park — is held by Mr. Charles Hayden, a son of the first occupier. It is not out of place to mention that at the last Royal Show held in Sydney, the root crops and vegetables taken from this centre largely contributed to the success of the South Coast and tablelands in taking first prize in the district exhibit. On these being shown to an old English farmer at the Easter Show, he expressed great astonishment and stated that he had no idea — although a long time in the State — that there was any place in New South Wales capable of producing such fine root crops, and that he had never seen anything to compare with them since he left the Old Country.
