| Personal Notes: |
|
Jane Kane came out to Australia as the convict Mary Keen - arriving 11th March 1803 on the ship Glatton. Early after arriving she changed her name to Jane Kane. Jane and James Hayden were not legally married - as were many of the early convicts who were encouraged to set up life together.
Jane and James Hayden had 6 children in all - James b. 1803 - d. ?; Jane b. 1804-5 - d. after 1925; Ann b. 1806 - d. 1841; John b. 1807 - d. 1869; Henry b. 1810 - d. 1885 and William b. 1813 - d. 1873. After James ' death in 1820 - Jane took five of her children to St. Mary's Catholic Church to be Baptised so that it showed her legal status of having been James' wife - she too was Baptised under the name of Jane Hayden. Thus she could then legally claim the land they had lived on and worked near present day Campbelltown. On 10th March 1823 - Jane married Mark Millington. He had also come out as a convict on the ship Glatton and was a neighbour. |
