Personal Notes:

The next suit was an undefended one. The petitioner was Ellen Hocking, a lady residing at Geelong, the respondent being Samuel Hocking. The petitioner was born at Sussex, England, and the respondent at Cornwall. They were married by the Rev. N. Kinsman, a minister of the Victorian Free Church of England denomination at Fitzroy, on 25th May, 1871, she being then a milliner, and he a wire worker. After the marriage Mr. and Mrs. Hocking lived at the house of the lady's parents, at Geelong, for six months. The respondent then proceeded to Melbourne to commence business as a wire worker in Lonsdale street. At his request she followed him to Melbourne, and for a month or two they lived at the respondent's place of business in Lonsdale street, after which they removed to Swanston-street. The wife complained of unkindness and ill-treatment during this period, and in May l872, with her husband's consent she went back to her parents at Geelong, he living with her there for three months. On 5th September, 1872, the respondent returned to Melbourne, and they ceased to live together, but before leaving her he struck her in the face, and knocked her down for not bringing a candle when he asked her. In April, 1873, the petitioner saw the respondent at her parents’ home, and he asked her if she would live with him again if he satisfied her that he was leading a steady life. She assented, but he went away and she has not seen him since. In 1878 she received a letter from the respondent purporting to come from Sydney, and containing a photograph of him, both being signed Hosken. In October, 1882, she received two letters from him from Hobart, but sent them back. On 27th September, 1883, the respondent com mitted bigamy by marrying at Dunedin, N.Z , under the name of Hosken, Eliza Martin, daughter of Samuel Martin, railway stationmaster. A decree nisi for dissolution of marriage was granted. Bendigo Advertiser 20 August 1885
