MRS. C. HOCKING
DIES AT 86
Mother of Pirie Football
Secretary
At the football match on Saturday
sportsmen expressed regret to Mr.
J. S. Hocking (secretary of Pirie
Football Association) at the death
earlier in the week of his aged
mother, Mrs. Charlotte Hocking, at
the home of another member of the
family in Brighton. Mrs. Hocking
was 86 years of age.
She was a daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. William Penn, two of the
earliest settlers in the State. They
came from England in the early
thirties and made their home in
Mount Pleasant district, where their
daughter was born in 1856. She grew
to womanhood there and was mar-
ried to Mr. William Hocking, who
was engaged for many years on
Moorna Station, on the Murray belt.
In later life the parents moved to
Gawler, where they lived for many
years. Mr. Hocking died there about
29 years ago. During the later years
of her life Mrs. Hocking lived with
members of her family, in succes-
sion at Prospect and Summertown,
and finally at Brighton. For the past
18 months her health had been im-
paired, but over the greater portion
of her long life she was virile—a true
type of pioneer.
Mrs. Hocking had seven children.
One daughter died many years ago,
and the remaining six are:—Messrs.
William (P'ort Hedland, Western
Australia), Joseph E. (Prospect),
John S. (Pirie), and Stanley P.
(Brighton); Mesdames G. Stephen-
son (Mylor) and G. Bradshaw
(Knightsbridge).
The remains were interred in
Gawler beside those of her late hus-
band. Among the numerous wreaths
were eight sent from Pirie. They
were from B.H.A.S. Picnic and
Sports Association, Pirie Football
Association, Proprietary Football
Club, Solomontown Football Club,
Accountancy Staff (B.H.A.S.), Cost
Office Staff (B.H.A.S.), Australian
Natives' Association, and Mr. and
Mrs. H. V. Merlino, family, and Mrs.
Merlino, sen.
Other floral tributes were sent by
the following:—Allen and Doris
Read, G. H. Hewish, Lill, Henry, and
girls, Miss Mayer and grandmother,
Harvey family, May, George, and
girls, Jack and Annie and family,
Nurse Hall, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon,
Ethel, Norm, and family, Joe, Myrtle,
and Douglas, Stan Corda and Morna
and Paketa, Mr. and Mrs. Malin,
Mrs. Pullman, Brighton Post Office
staff.
