COHUNA.
(FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT.)
On the 27th ult. Mr Alexander Mas-
terton passed away at his son's (James
Masterton) residence at the ripe age of
74 years. He has been many years a
resident of Kyneton, but finding his
health rapidly failing, he came to reside
at Cohuna. He was formerly a large con-
tractor in the Kyneton district and an
active member of the Kyneton cavalry.
His two daughters residing in this dis-
trict are Mrs W. C. Hall, of Cohuna, and
Mrs George Hall, of Koroop. Two other
daughters are married and reside in Mel-
bourne. His remains were interred in
the Kyneton cemetery on Tuesday, many
old residents by whom he was so highly
respected following the remains to the
grave.

BIRKIN.—On the 19th inst. at St.
Margaret's Hospital, Sandringham.
Elizabeth Birkin. relict of the late
Alfred Birkin, of Kyneton. Victoria,
in her 73rd year.

Kyneton Guardian 20 April 916
A Former Resident Passes. News has reached Kyneton concerning one of the earliest or our settlers in these parts whose name has become associated with the early history of the place with honour to her family. Mrs Elizabeth Birkin will be remembered here as the wife of the late Mr Alfred Birkin, who formerly worked so successfully in the butchering business in High street which for many years after was known familiarly as Birkin's. She was the loving mother of a large family of sons and daughters, most of whom have now removed from these parts. Those however who have remained are Mrs Charles Brown, the respected wife Mr C. Brown. coach builder. of Baynton street. and Mr W. Birkin who is in the employ of Mr Paul Gardiner. Mrs. Birkin had spent the latter part of her life in Western Australia, where her sons worked with success. Of late, however, she returned to Victoria and spent much of her time in Melbourne and Kyneton. Her health, due probably to her advancing years, has been showing signs of breaking up. She was previously the possessor of a fine constitution and fought against her growing weakness: but she was later obliged to enter St. Margaret's Hospital Sandringham where, despite careful nursing and the best of medical skill, she passed away yesterday in her 73rd year.

Kyneton Guardian 27 April 1916
Funeral
The remains of the late Mrs Alfred Birkin were laid to rest in the Kyneton Cemetery on Good Friday last. The funeral moved from the residence of her son, Mr William Birkin, in Market street. Mrs Birkin had spent the last 15 years of her life with her youngest daughter, Mrs W. Stewart, of Cliffe. Beach road. Sandringham, and she leaves four daughters and seven sons to mourn their loss. Four of her sons, Messrs Harry, Alfred, William and Charles Birkin, were pall hearers. The funeral service was read by the Ven. Archdeacon Bishop, of St. Pauls, and Mr I Benson efficiently carried out the mortuary arrangements.
